Former West Bengal minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Aroop Biswas appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the organization of a proposed football event involving Argentine football legend Lionel Messi.
The questioning marks a significant development in the high-profile probe, which has drawn public and political attention due to the scale of the event and allegations concerning financial transactions, organizational procedures, and possible misuse of funds.
CID Intensifies Investigation
According to officials familiar with the investigation, Aroop Biswas arrived at the CID headquarters and cooperated with investigators during several hours of questioning. The agency is examining the planning and financial arrangements linked to the proposed sporting event, which generated considerable public interest because of Messi’s global popularity.
Investigators are attempting to establish whether all financial dealings connected with the event complied with legal and administrative requirements. They are also examining the roles played by individuals associated with the planning, funding, and promotion of the event.
The CID has been collecting documents, financial records, and statements from various stakeholders as part of its wider investigation.
Questions Focus on Administrative and Financial Decisions
Sources indicated that investigators questioned Biswas about his interactions with organizers, government departments, and other individuals involved in preparations for the event.
Officials are reportedly examining whether public resources, official influence, or administrative support were utilized appropriately during the planning process. The investigation is also focused on identifying whether any procedural lapses occurred in granting permissions, handling sponsorships, or managing event-related finances.
Authorities are scrutinizing records to determine whether commitments made to sponsors, organizers, and other parties were fulfilled in accordance with applicable regulations.
Former Minister Cooperates With Investigators
After appearing before investigators, Aroop Biswas maintained that he had fully cooperated with the inquiry. He stated that he answered every question put before him and supplied all information requested by the investigating officers.
He also reiterated that he had acted within the framework of the law and expressed confidence that the investigation would ultimately establish the facts.
The questioning was conducted as part of the CID’s ongoing effort to gather evidence and verify information obtained during previous stages of the investigation.
Background of the Messi Event
The proposed event featuring Lionel Messi attracted significant excitement among football fans across West Bengal and other parts of the country. Expectations were high that one of football’s greatest icons would participate in promotional and sporting activities in the state.
However, the event later became the subject of controversy after allegations emerged regarding financial management, organizational commitments, and the execution of agreements connected with the programme.
The controversy prompted authorities to initiate a formal investigation to determine whether any criminal offences or financial irregularities had occurred.
Investigation Continues
The CID continues to examine documentary evidence, financial transactions, and witness testimonies as part of the probe. Officials have indicated that additional individuals connected with the organization and management of the proposed event may also be questioned if required.
Investigators have not announced any conclusions, and the inquiry remains ongoing. The agency is expected to continue reviewing evidence before deciding whether any further legal action is warranted.
The questioning of Aroop Biswas represents another important step in the investigation as authorities seek to establish accountability and determine whether any violations of law occurred during the planning and execution of the high-profile football event.
