Dehradun resident Kaushalya Devi, 75, is fighting for her life after being attacked by two Rottweilers during her morning walk on Sunday.
She underwent several surgeries on the same day. On Monday, doctors at Mahant Indresh Hospital conducted another operation to prevent infection in her severely injured arm.
Recalling the terrifying event, the victim’s son, Umang Nirwal, stated, “My mother was out for her morning walk when the neighbor’s two Rottweilers suddenly assaulted her. They attacked her – biting her face and legs, tearing off part of her ear and ripping flesh from her arm, crushing the bone beneath.”
“We have thoroughly cleaned and operated on her left arm, but the risk of infection remains significant,” said Dr. Yash Mohan, a senior orthopedic specialist. He noted that while surgery was also performed on her ear, the severity of the damage may necessitate plastic reconstruction.
The dogs’ owner, identified as Md Zaid, is currently evading capture along with the animals.Meanwhile, the Rottweiler attack has sparked concerns regarding the presence of prohibited dog breeds in residential neighborhoods.
In 2023, the Centre banned the ownership of 23 aggressive dog breeds, including Rottweilers, Pitbulls, and Cane Corsos, among others.
Interestingly, despite the government directive, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation has approximately 4,000 dogs registered in its records, including banned breeds: Rottweilers (148) and Pitbulls (98).
Commissioner Namami Bansal stated, “The Corporation will work with the police to identify owners of banned breeds and will ensure that action is taken against such individuals.”
