A second student associated with a private university in Jaipur was found dead inside a hostel room on Wednesday night, just a day after a BTech student from the same institution allegedly died by suicide on campus. The two incidents within a short span have raised concerns about student safety, mental health and the support systems available to students living and studying at the institution.
Police said the second student, who was from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, was found inside a hostel located near the university in Jaipur. Other students reportedly alerted the authorities after noticing a foul smell coming from the room. When police reached the location and opened the room, they found the student’s body inside.
The condition of the body indicated that the student may have died one or two days before it was discovered, according to the police. The body was subsequently sent to a hospital for post-mortem examination.
Investigators have not yet established the exact circumstances surrounding the death. Police officials said the cause and approximate time of death would be determined after the post-mortem examination. It was also not immediately clear whether investigators had recovered any suicide note from the room.
The case is therefore being investigated without drawing a premature conclusion about the circumstances of the student’s death. Authorities are expected to examine the hostel room, speak to fellow students and other people who may have interacted with the deceased, and establish a timeline leading up to the discovery of the body.
The latest incident came only a day after another student from the same private university allegedly died by suicide in a campus hostel on Tuesday. According to figures presented by the Rajasthan government in the state Assembly, 55 students died by suicide across the state between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2025. Kota recorded the highest number, with 28 cases during the two-year period. The city reported 16 student suicides in 2024 and another 12 in 2025.
Jaipur recorded six student suicide cases during the same two-year period, while Sikar, another major education and coaching destination, reported five cases. Kota and Sikar together accounted for 33 of the 55 student suicide deaths recorded across Rajasthan during the period, representing about 60 per cent of the state’s total.
The state government has previously identified several factors associated with student suicides, including academic pressure, mental stress, depression, family-related difficulties and disappointment connected with examinations. However, authorities have also acknowledged that the circumstances or reasons behind some deaths remain unclear or are still under investigation.
The latest death in Jaipur comes against this broader backdrop. However, investigators have yet to determine whether the second student’s death was connected to academic pressure, personal circumstances or any other factor. Until the post-mortem and police inquiry are completed, the exact cause should not be presumed.
The incidents have nevertheless highlighted the importance of effective student-support mechanisms in universities and hostels.
