Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has called for a complete overhaul of India’s education system, asserting that piecemeal reforms are no longer enough to address the deep-rooted issues affecting millions of students. Speaking during an interaction with students as part of the Chhatron Ki Goonj campaign, Gandhi said the country’s education framework needs to be “rebuilt from scratch” to ensure student safety, fairness and equal opportunities.
Addressing students, Gandhi expressed concern over repeated examination irregularities, paper leaks and administrative failures that, according to him, have severely damaged confidence in the education system. He argued that students deserve an academic environment where merit, hard work and honesty are rewarded without fear of systemic failures disrupting their future.
Examination Irregularities Undermine Students’ Future
Gandhi said recurring controversies surrounding competitive examinations have created uncertainty for lakhs of students who spend years preparing for crucial entrance and recruitment tests. He maintained that repeated paper leaks and cancelled examinations not only delay careers but also place immense psychological and financial pressure on students and their families.
According to him, restoring faith in the examination process should be one of the government’s highest priorities. He stressed that every student should have confidence that examinations will be conducted fairly, transparently and without interference.
Call for Structural Reforms
Highlighting the need for long-term solutions, Gandhi said India’s education system requires fundamental structural reforms instead of temporary corrective measures. He argued that rebuilding the system should involve students, teachers, education experts and policymakers working together to create a transparent, accountable and student-centric framework.
He said reforms should focus on strengthening examination mechanisms, improving institutional accountability and ensuring equal opportunities for every deserving student.
Paper Leaks a Serious National Concern
During his address, Gandhi described paper leaks as a growing national problem that has affected the academic aspirations of millions of young people. He claimed that repeated examination irregularities over the years have disrupted the futures of a large number of students, leading to frustration and uncertainty across the country.
He argued that unless strict accountability is established and examination systems are modernised, similar incidents may continue to affect aspiring students.
Financial and Emotional Impact on Students
Gandhi also highlighted the significant sacrifices made by students and their families in pursuit of education. He noted that many households invest substantial financial resources in coaching, study materials, travel and examination fees, hoping to secure better career opportunities for their children.
When examinations are compromised by paper leaks or administrative lapses, he said, students not only lose valuable time but also experience emotional distress, disappointment and increased uncertainty about their future.
Student Welfare Should Be the Priority
Emphasising the importance of student welfare, Gandhi said educational institutions and examination authorities must function with complete transparency and accountability. He asserted that protecting students’ interests should remain at the centre of every education policy and reform initiative.
According to him, rebuilding the education system would help restore public trust, improve academic standards and create a fair environment where students can compete based solely on merit.
Focus on Education Reform Continues
The remarks form part of Rahul Gandhi’s broader outreach to students through the Chhatron Ki Goonj campaign, which aims to highlight issues related to education, examination integrity and student welfare. Through these interactions, he has continued to advocate for comprehensive reforms designed to make India’s education system more transparent, reliable and equitable.
Gandhi maintained that ensuring fair examinations, strengthening institutions and protecting students’ futures should remain central to the country’s education agenda. He said meaningful reforms are essential to rebuild confidence in the system and provide every student with an equal opportunity to succeed.
