A devastating fire incident in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar has claimed the lives of three people, including a child, after a blaze erupted in a residential apartment complex during the early hours of Wednesday. The tragedy has prompted a detailed investigation, with authorities examining possible electrical faults and lapses in safety measures.
According to initial reports, the fire broke out around dawn at a multi-storey residential building located in the Laxmisagar area. The blaze rapidly spread through parts of the structure, trapping residents inside before emergency responders could reach the site. Despite swift efforts by fire services personnel, three individuals lost their lives in the incident.
The victims include an elderly couple and a 10-year-old child, who were reportedly inside the building when the fire intensified. While rescue teams managed to evacuate several residents safely, the three victims could not be saved due to the intensity of the flames and smoke accumulation.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that thick smoke engulfed the building within minutes, creating panic among residents. Firefighters deployed multiple teams to control the blaze and carry out rescue operations. Several occupants were escorted out of the building using stairways as visibility inside the structure deteriorated rapidly.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the fire may have originated from an electrical short circuit, although officials have not confirmed the exact cause. Investigators are currently examining wiring systems, electrical panels, and safety compliance measures within the apartment complex to determine whether negligence or technical failure triggered the incident.
Authorities have also begun reviewing fire safety protocols followed in the residential building. Concerns have been raised over the adequacy of preventive systems such as fire alarms, extinguishers, and emergency exits. Local officials have stated that a comprehensive safety audit may be initiated for similar housing complexes in the city.
Emergency responders confirmed that multiple residents were evacuated safely during the operation, preventing a higher casualty count. The rescued individuals were shifted to safer locations, and medical assistance was provided where necessary.
Police have registered a case and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. A detailed forensic investigation is underway to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the fire and to identify any lapses in compliance with building safety norms.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over fire preparedness in urban residential complexes, with officials emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
