Saudi Arabia said its air defence forces intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Mecca before it could enter the restricted airspace over Islam’s holiest city, amid a sharp escalation in attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and growing security concerns across the region.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening, according to Saudi authorities. The drone was reportedly detected and intercepted before reaching the prohibited airspace around Mecca, preventing the reported threat from moving closer to the city.

The Saudi-led coalition spokesperson, Turki al-Maliki, said the drone was intercepted by Saudi air defence forces. He described the security of Mecca, the Islamic holy sites and pilgrims as a critical national and religious priority.

The incident has heightened concerns because Mecca is home to the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba, the central direction of Muslim prayer and one of the most significant religious sites in Islam. The city receives millions of visitors each year, particularly during the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage seasons.

Saudi Arabia raises security concerns

Saudi authorities have increased security measures following a series of attacks and threats involving Houthi forces in recent days. Security alerts were also issued in several parts of the country, including Mecca, Jeddah and Taif.

The alert issued in Mecca was particularly significant because of the city’s religious importance and the large number of pilgrims and residents present there. Authorities said the warning was lifted after a short period.

Al-Maliki described the latest drone incident as the second reported attempt by the Houthis to target the area around Mecca. He referred to an earlier 2017 incident in which Saudi authorities said a ballistic missile had been launched toward the holy city.

Saudi officials have warned that attacks threatening the Two Holy Mosques or pilgrims would be treated as a serious security matter. The latest interception is therefore likely to increase pressure on Saudi Arabia to strengthen its air-defence measures around strategically and religiously important locations.

Houthis deny targeting Mecca

The Houthi movement has rejected the Saudi allegation that it was targeting Mecca or any other Islamic holy site.

A Houthi military source said the group did not pose a threat to Mecca or other religious locations and dismissed the Saudi account. The denial adds a significant point of dispute surrounding the incident, as Saudi authorities and the Houthi movement have presented different accounts of the drone’s intended destination.

The Houthis have nevertheless claimed responsibility for several attacks against Saudi targets during the recent escalation. The group has said some of its attacks were carried out in response to Saudi military operations in Yemen.

Conflict spreads beyond Yemen

The drone incident comes against the backdrop of renewed fighting involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia after a period of relative calm.

Saudi Arabia has been involved in the Yemen conflict since 2015, when it led a military coalition against the Houthis after the group seized large areas of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.

A United Nations-brokered truce in 2022 significantly reduced attacks on Saudi territory. However, tensions have risen again, with the Houthis launching attacks involving missiles and drones and expanding their activities along parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline.

The renewed fighting has increased concerns about the security of important maritime routes, particularly the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is an important route for international shipping and energy supplies.

The escalation is also taking place amid wider instability in the Middle East, where conflicts involving several regional actors have created additional pressure on governments and international shipping networks.

Religious significance adds to regional concern

The reported interception near Mecca carries particular significance because of the city’s importance to Muslims around the world.

Mecca hosts the Grand Mosque, where the Kaaba is located, and remains the destination for Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. Millions of Muslims also travel to the city throughout the year to perform Umrah.

Any security incident near the city can therefore have consequences beyond Saudi Arabia’s domestic security concerns. It can affect pilgrimage arrangements, public confidence and wider perceptions of safety around the Islamic holy sites.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has condemned the reported incident, reflecting the wider sensitivity surrounding any perceived threat to Mecca and other Islamic holy places.

Growing pressure on Saudi Arabia

The latest drone interception comes as Saudi Arabia faces multiple security challenges linked to the widening regional conflict.

Recent Houthi attacks have reportedly targeted Saudi military and strategic locations. One recent attack on a Saudi air base was reported to have injured civilians, while Saudi Arabia has also faced threats to important energy infrastructure.

The kingdom has sought diplomatic and political support from regional partners as the security situation deteriorates. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has also engaged with other Arab leaders amid concerns over the growing impact of the conflict on regional stability and energy security.

The developments have raised questions about how far the renewed confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis could expand. The situation also has implications for international trade because of the importance of the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb to global shipping.

For now, Saudi authorities say the drone was destroyed before it could enter Mecca’s restricted airspace.
