A retired Indian Air Force Group Captain and veteran of the Kargil War was allegedly assaulted with an iron rod following a dispute over parking at a business park in Gurugram’s Sector 65. Police have registered a First Information Report against an unidentified parking attendant and launched an investigation to identify the accused.

The injured veteran, identified as Amit Kumar Gupta, had gone to a restaurant with his family for dinner at Magnum Global Park on September 10 when the alleged assault took place. Gupta, who had participated in Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil conflict, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital after suffering multiple fractures.

According to Gupta’s complaint, the incident began after he faced difficulties finding a place to park his vehicle within the business complex. He alleged that he was directed from one parking area to another but was unable to park his car at any of the authorised locations.

Gupta said he visited at least four designated parking areas while trying to find a place for his vehicle. The situation reportedly escalated when one of the parking attendants allegedly became involved in an argument with him.

According to the complaint, the attendant allegedly punched the window of Gupta’s car several times in an attempt to damage it. Gupta then stepped out of his vehicle after the confrontation intensified.

He alleged that the parking attendant subsequently picked up an iron rod and struck him repeatedly. The blows reportedly landed on his left arm and head before the accused fled from the location.

Gupta said he attempted to seek immediate assistance by contacting his family as well as the police control room. However, he alleged that help did not arrive immediately after the incident.

Police register FIR against unidentified suspect

Police officials said the incident followed an argument between Gupta and the parking attendant after the veteran was repeatedly directed to different parking locations within the business premises.

An officer from the Sector 65 police station said Gupta had initially informed authorities that he would submit a formal complaint after recovering from his injuries. His written complaint was eventually submitted on Sunday night.

Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR against the unidentified parking attendant under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on Monday morning.

Investigators are now working to establish the identity of the accused and determine the exact sequence of events leading to the alleged assault. Police have also said efforts are underway to locate and arrest the suspect.

Veteran’s military background

The case has drawn attention because of Gupta’s background as a former senior officer of the Indian Air Force. He was associated with Operation Safed Sagar, the IAF’s aerial campaign during the 1999 Kargil War.

The alleged assault occurred during what began as a routine family dinner outing but escalated into a physical confrontation over access to parking facilities.

The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the parking dispute, the conduct of the attendant and the events that followed the initial argument. Police action will also depend on evidence collected during the investigation, including statements from witnesses and other available material.

For now, the accused parking attendant remains unidentified, while Gupta continues to receive medical treatment for injuries sustained during the alleged attack.
