Two Killed as Thar Collides With Motorcycle in Delhi Cantonment; Driver Arrested

Two people were killed in a road accident in Delhi Cantonment on Wednesday evening after a Mahindra Thar collided with the motorcycle on which they were travelling, police said. The incident took place near the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) red light at around 5 pm.

According to preliminary findings, the motorcycle appears to have skidded on the road before being struck from behind by the Thar. Police said the collision left both riders seriously injured. They were subsequently taken to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

The victims, a man and a woman believed to be between 45 and 50 years old, had not been identified by police at the time of the initial investigation. Officials said they were travelling towards their home in Sector 1, Dwarka, after completing their duty at the New Delhi Municipal Council office on Lodhi Road.

Accident reported by police staff member

The accident came to the attention of authorities after a staff member of the Delhi Cantonment police station, who was returning from duty, witnessed the aftermath and alerted the police station.

A police team was dispatched to the location and found the two motorcycle riders injured. They were rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment, but their injuries proved fatal.

Police have since begun examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the movement of both vehicles immediately before the collision and the events that led to the motorcycle losing balance.

Preliminary probe points to motorcycle skid

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel said the initial inquiry indicated that the motorcycle apparently slipped on the road. The Thar, which was travelling behind the motorcycle, then collided with it.

Investigators are expected to establish the exact sequence of events through further examination of the accident site and other available evidence. The precise circumstances leading to the motorcycle’s skid and the speed and manner in which the SUV was being driven remain part of the investigation.

Thar driver arrested

Police identified the driver of the Mahindra Thar as Bhupendra, 26, a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana. He was arrested in connection with the accident.

Officials said Bhupendra owns a milk booth in Rohini. The vehicle has also become an important part of the investigation as police work to reconstruct the moments immediately preceding the collision.

The arrest follows the initial police assessment of the crash and the collection of evidence at the scene. Further investigation will determine the applicable legal provisions and the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Victims’ identities yet to be confirmed

The identities of the deceased had not been established by police when the initial details of the accident were released. Their bodies were sent for postmortem examination as part of the standard procedure in a fatal road accident.

The postmortem examination is expected to assist investigators in documenting the nature and extent of the injuries suffered by the victims.

Police are continuing efforts to establish the identities of the deceased and notify their families.

The fatal crash has brought renewed attention to road safety in the national capital, particularly the dangers faced by two-wheeler riders in collisions involving larger vehicles.
