Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Senapati district after a gunfight broke out between security personnel and unidentified armed individuals, leaving a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer injured. The confrontation occurred in the Taphou area after two houses were allegedly set on fire, triggering renewed tensions between communities in the region.

CRPF Officer Injured During Exchange of Fire

The injured security personnel was identified as 54-year-old Pradeep Singh, a sub-inspector attached to the F/36 battalion of the CRPF.

According to officials, Singh sustained injuries during the exchange of fire with unidentified armed individuals. He was immediately evacuated and taken to Senapati district hospital for treatment.

Officials said the officer’s condition was stable and that he was out of danger.

The gunfight took place amid heightened tension in the Taphou area, where security forces were responding to developments following incidents of arson.

Two Houses Set on Fire

Before the gunfight, two houses in and around Taphou were allegedly targeted and set ablaze by unidentified individuals.

One of the houses reportedly belonged to a member of the Kuki community, while the other was associated with a member of the Poumai community, a Naga subgroup.

The motive behind the arson was not immediately clear. Authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding the fires and attempting to determine whether the incidents were connected to the subsequent armed confrontation.

The burning of properties belonging to people from different communities heightened apprehensions among local residents and raised concerns about possible retaliatory violence.

Security personnel were deployed in the area following the incidents as authorities attempted to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Protest Erupts in Senapati

The latest incidents also triggered protests in Senapati headquarters.

The demand came amid growing concerns that the latest incidents could deepen existing tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities.

Earlier Ambushes Added to Tensions

On May 13, twin ambushes were reported at two separate locations. The incidents were followed by retaliatory kidnappings involving civilians from the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities.

Officials said 48 civilians were abducted during the escalation. The hostages were eventually released after spending nearly a month in captivity.

However, tensions remained high even after the releases. Six Naga men were later found dead near Kharam Vaiphei, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi district.

The deaths further complicated relations between the communities and contributed to an atmosphere of fear and suspicion.
