Dehradun witnessed a tragic hospital fire after an air-conditioning unit installed in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private medical facility allegedly exploded due to a short circuit, triggering panic, heavy smoke, and emergency evacuations. The incident resulted in the death of an elderly woman patient and left multiple others injured, including patients, attendants, and emergency responders.

According to officials, the fire broke out during the morning hours when the ICU was housing several critically ill patients under intensive care. The explosion in the AC unit quickly escalated into a fire, filling the ward with dense smoke and severely hampering visibility and breathing conditions inside the building.

Elderly Patient Succumbs During Treatment

The deceased has been identified as an elderly woman who was already admitted to the ICU and was on ventilator support at the time of the incident. Medical authorities confirmed that she died due to complications arising during the emergency evacuation and subsequent treatment, with smoke inhalation and oxygen deprivation believed to have played a critical role.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly as the fire spread and rescue operations were underway. 

Multiple Injuries, Including Patients and Rescue Personnel

At least several individuals sustained injuries in the incident. The injured include hospital patients, attendants, and members of police and fire services who rushed into the building to carry out evacuation efforts.

Reports indicate that some rescuers suffered breathing difficulties, suffocation, and exhaustion while extracting patients trapped inside smoke-filled wards. A number of patients were shifted to nearby hospitals for advanced treatment, while critically ill individuals remain under close observation.

Among those affected were vulnerable patients requiring urgent medical attention, further complicating the evacuation process.

Rapid Spread of Smoke Triggers Emergency Response

Eyewitness accounts and official statements suggest that the fire originated in the ICU following an AC unit malfunction and suspected short circuit, which led to an internal explosion. The resulting smoke quickly spread through connected hospital areas, creating chaos and forcing immediate evacuation.

Firefighters, police personnel, and disaster response teams were deployed to the scene. They managed to bring the fire under control after a strenuous operation and successfully evacuated several patients from the building.

Administrative Action and Investigation Ordered

Following the incident, authorities have initiated a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and assess possible lapses in hospital safety systems.

Health and district administration officials have also ordered inspections of private hospitals across the region to ensure compliance with fire safety norms and emergency preparedness standards. A magisterial inquiry has additionally been initiated to review the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
