India must accelerate its journey towards complete self-reliance in defence production to safeguard its national security interests in an increasingly uncertain global environment, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said.

Speaking at a public engagement linked to major defence manufacturing initiatives, Singh underscored that depending on foreign nations for critical military requirements leaves any country vulnerable during times of crisis. He stressed that India’s long-term security strategy must be built on indigenous capability, domestic innovation, and industrial strength.

According to Singh, the global security landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, marked by geopolitical tensions, technological disruptions, and shifting alliances. In such a scenario, he said, nations cannot afford to outsource their core defence needs.

Push for Indigenous Defence Ecosystem

The Defence Minister highlighted the significant transformation India’s defence sector has undergone over the past decade, noting a steady rise in domestic production capacity and indigenous manufacturing projects.

He pointed out that India, once among the world’s largest importers of defence equipment, is now steadily reducing its dependence on foreign suppliers through sustained policy reforms and initiatives promoting local production.

Singh noted that defence production in the country has increased substantially in recent years, while defence exports have also seen a sharp rise, reflecting growing global confidence in Indian-made systems.

He reiterated that programmes under the broader vision of self-reliant India are not merely economic measures but strategic necessities aimed at strengthening sovereignty and operational readiness.   

Strategic Importance of Self-Reliance

Emphasising the strategic dimension of defence manufacturing, Singh said that true national security is achieved only when a country has full control over its critical military technologies and supply chains.

He cautioned that reliance on external sources for essential defence systems could compromise operational independence during emergencies or wartime scenarios.

The minister also stressed the importance of integrating research institutions, defence laboratories, private industry, and startups into a unified ecosystem capable of rapidly developing and deploying advanced military technologies.

Collaboration Between Government and Industry

Singh highlighted the growing collaboration between the government and private sector players in building a robust defence industrial base. He said this partnership is crucial for accelerating innovation and ensuring that India remains future-ready.

He described the current phase as a “transformational movement” in which multiple stakeholders are contributing to the expansion of indigenous defence capabilities, including next-generation platforms, advanced combat systems, and emerging technologies.

Vision for Future Warfare Preparedness

The Defence Minister also indicated that future warfare will be technology-driven, requiring faster transition from research and design to battlefield deployment. He emphasised that India must invest heavily in advanced technologies to remain competitive in evolving security scenarios.

He said that strengthening domestic defence manufacturing is essential not only for self-sufficiency but also for achieving strategic autonomy in decision-making and operational flexibility.
