A tragic case of suspected food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption in Chhattisgarh has resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy and illness among three other children in Janjgir-Champa district. The incident took place in Ghurkot village, where several children reportedly consumed sliced watermelon at a family gathering. The fruit had been prepared earlier and left stored for some time before being eaten.

Shortly after consuming the watermelon, the children began showing alarming symptoms, including repeated vomiting, diarrhoea, and breathing difficulties. Their condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting immediate medical intervention. Family members rushed them to the nearest district hospital with the help of emergency medical services.

Despite efforts by doctors, one of the children, a 15-year-old boy, was declared dead on arrival. The remaining three children were admitted for treatment and are currently under close medical observation.   

Preliminary assessments by medical officials suggest a possible case of food poisoning, though they have clarified that the exact cause of illness and death will only be confirmed after detailed laboratory testing and forensic analysis.

Authorities have collected samples from the leftover watermelon and sent them for testing to determine whether bacterial contamination, improper storage, or any toxic substance may have contributed to the incident.
