Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens across the country to adopt a more restrained lifestyle in response to rising global economic uncertainty and escalating energy concerns linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Speaking during a public event in Telangana, the Prime Minister called on Indians to reduce dependence on imported resources, conserve foreign exchange reserves, and revive several habits that became common during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The appeal comes at a time when India is facing mounting pressure from rising crude oil prices and global supply chain disruptions. India imports a major portion of its crude oil requirements, making the economy highly sensitive to fluctuations in international energy markets. The weakening rupee and increasing import bills have further intensified concerns over inflation and economic stability.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi urged citizens to reduce unnecessary consumption of petrol, diesel, and other petroleum products. He encouraged greater use of public transport systems, metro rail services, carpooling, and electric vehicles to minimize fuel dependency. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of shifting freight transportation from roads to railways in order to reduce fuel consumption and logistics costs.

One of the most discussed aspects of the Prime Minister’s speech was his request to Indians to avoid non-essential gold purchases for at least one year. He stated that reducing gold imports would help conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves during a period of global instability. India remains one of the world’s largest consumers of gold, and heavy imports significantly impact the country’s trade balance. According to Modi, supporting local tourism and Indian-made products would strengthen the domestic economy while helping reduce pressure on the country’s reserves.

Drawing comparisons with the Covid-19 period, PM Modi suggested that companies and professionals should once again adopt work-from-home systems, virtual meetings, and video conferencing wherever possible. He explained that reducing daily commuting and business travel could significantly cut fuel usage nationwide. The suggestion triggered widespread discussion online, with many people debating the practicality and economic implications of reviving pandemic-era working models.

In addition to fuel conservation, Modi urged citizens to reduce edible oil consumption and adopt healthier dietary practices. He also appealed to farmers to lower dependence on chemical fertilizers and gradually move towards organic and sustainable farming methods. According to the Prime Minister, these measures would not only reduce import dependence but also improve long-term public health and environmental sustainability.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of “Vocal for Local” and called on citizens to prioritize Indian-made goods instead of imported products. He clarified that he was not asking people to discard foreign products already in use, but urged them to consciously support domestic manufacturing in future purchases. Modi linked this appeal to the broader vision of building an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” or self-reliant India.
