At least one person was killed and five others injured in a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, authorities have confirmed, in an incident that triggered panic and a major police response.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, officers initially responded to reports of an active shooter, urging the public to avoid the area as the situation unfolded. All injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, and officials clarified that no reunification center was set up during the emergency response.
The shooting stemmed from a confrontation between two groups and was not a random act of violence. Liz Murrill stated that while the altercation appeared targeted, several bystanders were caught in the crossfire, contributing to the number of casualties.
The Mall of Louisiana was temporarily shut down as law enforcement swept the area and began their investigation. Nearby Baton Rouge General Hospital was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure while victims were being treated.
Local leaders expressed concern over the violence. Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards described the incident as deeply troubling and called for calm as authorities work through the details. Meanwhile, US Senator Bill Cassidy said he is closely monitoring developments and urged support for law enforcement and victims’ families.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
