European airlines are reportedly beginning to scale back operations as fuel concerns intensify. Lufthansa revealed on Thursday that it plans to shut down its regional subsidiary, CityLine, by the weekend, grounding all 27 of its aircraft. Meanwhile, KLM has already cancelled around 160 flights scheduled over the next month, as per reports.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency warned that Europe may have only about six weeks’ worth of jet fuel remaining. He described the situation as potentially the most severe energy crisis in recent times.

Typically, European countries maintain fuel reserves that can last for several months. However, jet fuel derived from refined kerosene is one of the largest costs for airlines, accounting for roughly 30% of their operating expenses, according to the International Air Transport Association. Prices have already surged significantly since the conflict began, and shortages may soon follow.

Industry analysts note that nearly 40% of Europe’s jet fuel imports usually pass through the Strait of Hormuz. With shipments halted since the outbreak of hostilities, concerns over dwindling supplies are rising rapidly.

Airlines are responding cautiously, attempting to reassure passengers while quietly adjusting pricing strategies. Some carriers have already increased fees for baggage and other services, incorporated higher costs into ticket prices, or introduced fuel surcharges. In addition to fare hikes, travelers may also see reduced flight options and less flexible scheduling as airlines adapt to the evolving situation.
