The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals in light of escalating violence in Nepal, which has witnessed one of its deadliest uprisings in recent years. The unrest has culminated in the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday, further deepening the political turmoil.
In its advisory, the MEA urged Indian citizens to defer all non-essential travel to Nepal until the situation stabilises. For those already in the Himalayan nation, the ministry has advised them to stay indoors, avoid venturing onto the streets, and exercise maximum caution. It further urged Indian nationals to follow safety instructions issued by both local Nepali authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
To assist those in need, the MEA has provided emergency helpline numbers for the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu:
+977-980 860 2881 and +977-981 032 6134. These numbers are also accessible for WhatsApp calls.
The advisory comes after days of intense “Gen Z” protests across Nepal, with demonstrators storming government offices and demanding accountability for recent fatalities. The unrest escalated on Monday when protesters torched Prime Minister Oli’s private residence in Balkot, prompting the deployment of the Nepal Army to restore order.
Following Oli’s resignation, which President Ram Chandra Poudel accepted, protesters were seen celebrating in the streets. Many described the development as a turning point for the country. “It is very good for our nation that Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has resigned. Now the youth will stand and give its contribution in developing the nation,” one demonstrator told reporters.
The situation in Nepal remains tense, and Indian nationals have been advised to exercise extreme vigilance until further updates are issued by the MEA.
