TCS to Lay Off 12,000 Employees Amid Business Transformation: Impact on Pune’s IT Hubs

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services provider, has announced plans to lay off around 12,000 employees, representing about 2% of its global workforce. This restructuring will mainly impact middle and senior-level roles as the company adapts to a new business model and focuses on becoming a future-ready organization.

As of June 30, 2025, TCS reported a headcount of 6,13,069 employees, with a net addition of 5,000 during the April–June quarter. Despite this growth, the company is proceeding with strategic workforce reshaping to meet evolving business and client needs.

Official Statement

In its official announcement, TCS stated that the layoffs are part of a broader transformation driven by investments in emerging technologies, expansion into new global markets, adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), and an overhaul of its operating model.

The company explained, “To prepare for the future, we are implementing strategic initiatives, including integrating AI across operations, investing in next-generation technologies, and realigning our workforce to evolving client demands.”

Impact on Employees

TCS emphasized that many employees are being reskilled or redeployed, but certain roles where redeployment is not feasible will be phased out. The company assured that impacted employees will receive benefits, counseling, and outplacement assistance to support their transition.

The decision is expected to have a significant impact on tech professionals working in Pune’s IT hubs, including Hinjawadi, as the city is one of TCS’s major operational centers. This restructuring marks a critical step in TCS’s journey toward digital transformation and future readiness.
