PM Modi at BRICS: “Condemning terrorism should be our principle, not just a matter of convenience”

During the 17th BRICS Summit held on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that condemning terrorism should be a “principle” rather than a matter of “convenience.” He described terrorism as the “most serious challenge” facing humanity in today’s global landscape.

While addressing the BRICS Session on Peace and Security, the Prime Minister pointed to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, as a stark reminder of the threat terrorism poses to global peace, urging for steadfast international unity.

He remarked that the attack was a significant blow to the “soul, identity, and dignity” of India, while also acknowledging the international support the nation received in this time of crisis.

“Terrorism has emerged as the most serious challenge for humanity today. Recently, India endured a brutal and cowardly terrorist attack. The incident in Pahalgam on April 22 was a direct assault on the soul, identity, and dignity of India. This attack not only affected India but also humanity as a whole. In this moment of sorrow, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the friendly nations that stood by us, offering their support and condolences,” the Prime Minister stated.

He further asserted, “Condemning terrorism must be our ‘principle,’ not merely a ‘convenience.’ If we first consider the country where the attack occurred and the victims involved, it would amount to a betrayal of humanity.” He also stressed the importance of taking decisive action, advocating for sanctions against such acts.
