A 29-year-old man wanted in an assault case died during a police operation at his residence in Jodhpur’s Udaymandir Asan area, triggering protests and tension in the locality. Police said the man fell from the third floor while attempting to escape after officers arrived to execute an arrest warrant. His family, however, has alleged that police personnel pushed him from the balcony.
The incident took place late on Wednesday when a police team went to the man’s house after receiving information that he was present there. According to the police account, the man climbed towards the rooftop after noticing the approaching officers and fell while allegedly attempting to flee. Police said he became entangled in electrical wires during the fall and suffered an electric shock in addition to injuries sustained in the fall.
The injured man was taken to a hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead. The circumstances surrounding his death subsequently led to a confrontation between the family, local residents and police personnel.
Police officials said an arrest warrant had been pending against the man and that he had been absconding in connection with an assault case. The raid was conducted as part of efforts to execute the warrant.
The family has disputed the police version of events. Relatives alleged that police officers followed the man upstairs and pushed him from the balcony. They also made allegations concerning the conduct of police personnel during the operation and claimed that members of the family had been mistreated.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the police have maintained that the man fell while attempting to escape.
Following the death, family members and residents gathered at the hospital and began protesting. The situation became tense, with reports of damage to a police vehicle and an alleged assault on a police constable. Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Several local political figures also reached the hospital as the protests continued. Among those who visited were former legislator Manisha Panwar and Congress leader Rajendra Solanki.
Local councillor Raju Bhati demanded financial assistance for the deceased man’s family and said the body would not be taken until their demands were addressed. He also raised allegations concerning an alleged payment made to police personnel, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Police officials said efforts were being made to communicate with the family and calm the situation. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Narendra Singh Devda said the police team had gone to the residence to execute the arrest warrant and that the man sustained injuries after falling. He said officers immediately took him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident has raised questions over the circumstances of the death and the competing accounts given by police and the deceased man’s relatives. The family’s allegations and the police version remain different, making an impartial investigation important to establish what happened during the raid.
Authorities have deployed additional personnel in the area amid concerns over further unrest. The circumstances surrounding the fall, the allegations made by the family and the conduct of the police operation are expected to remain under scrutiny as the matter develops.
