A 25-year-old delivery worker in Bengaluru was allegedly assaulted by a group of people in the early hours of Saturday following a confrontation over abusive remarks, with the incident reportedly involving a dispute over language.
The delivery worker, identified as Basavaraj, was returning home after completing a delivery when the alleged incident occurred in the Yelahanka New Town area. According to details recorded in the First Information Report (FIR), a group of girls allegedly abused him in Hindi, following which an argument broke out between the two sides.
Basavaraj, who is also pursuing his education while working as a delivery agent, was travelling from 4th Phase in Yelahanka New Town towards Santhosh Nagar after completing a delivery at around 4.40 am. The FIR states that the women allegedly directed abusive remarks at him, prompting him to confront them.
Argument escalates after language-related confrontation
According to the complaint, Basavaraj told the group that he did not understand Hindi and asked them to explain in Kannada why they were abusing him. The confrontation reportedly intensified when the women allegedly pulled his cap and attempted to attack him.
Concerned about the situation, Basavaraj reportedly contacted the police emergency helpline 112. He also called an acquaintance, identified as Ashok, for assistance.
The situation allegedly escalated further when the people involved called their male friends to the location. The men allegedly attacked Basavaraj, turning what had initially been a verbal confrontation into a physical assault. 
Delivery worker allegedly beaten with wooden stick
The FIR states that the attackers allegedly assaulted Basavaraj and used a wooden stick found on the road during the attack. He reportedly sustained injuries to several parts of his body, including his back, head and nose.
The assault allegedly caused bleeding injuries to the delivery worker. His friend Ashok arrived at the scene and attempted to intervene, but the FIR alleges that he was also attacked and suffered an injury to his head.
The alleged attackers also reportedly continued to use abusive language and threatened the two men during the confrontation. The FIR states that they warned the victims that they would not be spared.
The incident was reportedly captured on camera, and footage of the alleged assault has circulated on social media, drawing attention to the incident.
Police register case against unidentified accused
Following the incident, police at the Yelahanka New Town police station registered a case against unidentified individuals. The case has been filed under Sections 118, 126, 351, 352 and Section 3 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The police investigation is expected to focus on identifying those involved in the alleged assault and establishing the sequence of events that led to the confrontation. The available details are based on the allegations recorded in the FIR, and the claims against the accused will be subject to investigation.
The incident has also renewed discussion around language-related confrontations in Bengaluru, where disagreements involving Kannada, Hindi and other languages have occasionally generated public controversy.
Language tensions remain a sensitive issue in Bengaluru
Bengaluru is home to people from different parts of India, with Kannada serving as the state’s official language while Hindi and English are also widely spoken. The city’s large migrant population and expanding technology, services and delivery sectors have made linguistic diversity a regular feature of everyday life.
At the same time, incidents involving language-based disagreements have periodically triggered debates about linguistic identity, mutual respect and the need for peaceful communication.
The latest incident, however, involves allegations of physical violence and is being investigated by the police. While the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation will be established during the investigation, the case highlights how a verbal disagreement can escalate rapidly when tensions are not controlled.
For workers in the delivery and gig economy, such incidents also raise broader concerns about personal safety. Delivery personnel frequently work late at night and in the early hours, often travelling alone through unfamiliar locations to complete orders.
As the investigation progresses, police are expected to examine available video footage and other evidence to identify the accused and determine their individual roles in the alleged assault.
