Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday criticised the cancellation of the proposed ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in Prayagraj, questioning the decision of the administration to withdraw permission for the event. She said she was unable to understand what concerns or fears led authorities to stop a programme that was aimed at engaging with students.
Reacting to the development, Priyanka Gandhi alleged that restricting such programmes raises questions about the administration’s approach towards public discussions and student participation. She stated that platforms where young people can express their views and discuss issues affecting them should not be discouraged.
The Congress leader’s remarks came after the venue permission for the student-focused programme was withdrawn, creating a political controversy in the region. The event was expected to provide a platform for students to share their opinions, raise concerns, and participate in discussions related to education and youth issues.
Priyanka Gandhi questioned why authorities felt the need to prevent the gathering, suggesting that democratic spaces should allow conversations and interactions among citizens, especially young people. She emphasised that students should have opportunities to voice their perspectives without unnecessary restrictions.
The cancellation has triggered reactions from political circles, with Congress leaders criticising the decision and demanding clarity from the administration regarding the reasons behind the withdrawal of permission. Party members claimed that stopping such programmes could limit opportunities for dialogue between political representatives and students.
The administration’s decision has also drawn attention because Prayagraj is a major educational centre with a significant student population. Political parties often organise youth-oriented programmes in the city to connect with students and discuss issues related to education, employment, and social concerns.
The controversy is expected to continue as opposition leaders question the reasons behind the cancellation, while authorities may face demands to explain the circumstances that led to the withdrawal of approval for the event. Chhatron Ki Goonj programme cancellation.
