The investigation into the deadly ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur has taken a major step forward with the arrest of four individuals suspected of involvement in the attack. The arrests come as security agencies continue extensive operations across the state’s Ukhrul district to identify everyone responsible for one of the deadliest attacks on security personnel in the region in recent months.
The ambush claimed the lives of two Assam Rifles personnel and left several others injured, prompting a large-scale counter-insurgency operation involving multiple security agencies. Officials have described the arrests as a significant breakthrough while emphasizing that the investigation is still ongoing to uncover the full conspiracy behind the attack.
Deadly Attack on Security Convoy
The attack took place on National Highway-202 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district when a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles was travelling through the area. According to officials, heavily armed militants launched a carefully planned assault by first triggering an improvised explosive device (IED) before opening indiscriminate fire on the convoy.
The attack resulted in the deaths of Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman C.M. Singh of the Assam Rifles. Several other personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of fire. Security forces immediately responded and launched search operations in the surrounding forests and nearby villages.
Four Suspects Taken Into Custody
Following intelligence-based operations and continuous surveillance, security agencies arrested four suspects believed to be linked to the ambush. Officials said the arrests were made after coordinated efforts involving multiple security and law enforcement agencies.
The accused are currently being questioned to determine their exact role in planning and executing the attack. Investigators are also examining whether they were directly involved in the ambush or provided logistical support, shelter, transportation, or intelligence to the attackers.
Authorities have indicated that further arrests are possible as the investigation progresses.
Massive Search Operation Underway
Since the ambush, security forces have intensified combing and search operations across sensitive areas of Ukhrul district. Personnel from the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, Border Security Force (BSF), and other security agencies are conducting coordinated operations to trace the remaining attackers.
Area domination patrols, intelligence-led raids, and searches in remote forest regions are continuing as investigators attempt to dismantle the militant network responsible for the attack. Security teams are also searching for weapons, explosives, communication devices, and other evidence linked to the incident.
Investigation Focuses on Militant Network
Investigators believe the attack was carefully planned and executed with prior reconnaissance and coordination. The use of explosives followed by heavy gunfire suggests that the attackers had prepared the operation well in advance.
Officials are analysing digital evidence, communication records, forensic material, and intelligence inputs to establish the complete sequence of events. The investigation is focused not only on those who carried out the attack but also on anyone who may have assisted in planning or facilitating it.
Government Reaffirms Security Commitment
The attack has been strongly condemned by the government and senior security officials. Authorities have assured that all those involved in the incident will be identified and brought to justice under the law.
Officials stated that attacks targeting security personnel will not affect ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region. Both state and central agencies are working together to ensure a thorough investigation and strengthen security measures in vulnerable areas.
Continuing Security Challenges in Northeast India
The incident once again highlights the security challenges faced by forces operating in parts of Northeast India where insurgent activities continue to pose serious threats. Security convoys travelling through remote and hilly terrain remain vulnerable to planned attacks, making intelligence gathering and coordinated counter-insurgency operations essential.
Experts believe that timely arrests and sustained investigations are critical to dismantling militant networks and preventing similar incidents in the future.
Investigation Continues
Officials have confirmed that the investigation remains active, with the four arrested suspects being interrogated for further leads. Security forces continue search operations to locate other individuals believed to have participated in or supported the ambush.
Authorities have reiterated that every lead will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that all those responsible for planning, supporting, or carrying out the deadly attack are brought before the law.
