Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has accused the Central Government of deliberately delaying the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory because the people elected the National Conference (NC) to form the government. His remarks have added fresh momentum to the ongoing political debate over the constitutional and administrative future of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking on the issue, Abdullah alleged that the delay in restoring statehood was politically motivated rather than administrative. According to him, the people of Jammu and Kashmir exercised their democratic right by voting for the National Conference, but instead of respecting the public mandate, the Centre has continued to withhold the restoration of full statehood.

The Chief Minister argued that the people of the region should not be penalized for making a democratic choice. He maintained that the restoration of statehood had been repeatedly promised and that the commitment should now be fulfilled without further delay.

Statehood Remains a Key Political Demand

The issue of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood has remained one of the most significant political demands since the former state was reorganized into two Union Territories in August 2019. The reorganization led to the creation of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh following the revocation of the region’s special constitutional status.

Since then, several political parties across Jammu and Kashmir have consistently demanded the restoration of statehood, arguing that an elected government should enjoy full administrative and legislative authority to effectively govern the region.

Omar Abdullah reiterated that while elections have been conducted and an elected government is functioning, the absence of statehood continues to restrict the powers available to the administration. He suggested that the democratic process remains incomplete until Jammu and Kashmir regains its status as a full-fledged state.

Accuses Centre of Political Discrimination

The Chief Minister claimed that the delay in restoring statehood appears linked to the political outcome of the Assembly elections. According to Abdullah, had a different political party secured power, the process of restoring statehood might have progressed much faster.

He asserted that withholding statehood because of electoral results undermines democratic values and sends the wrong message to voters. Abdullah emphasized that governments should respect electoral mandates regardless of which political party emerges victorious.

He further stated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve equal constitutional treatment and should not face political discrimination based on the outcome of democratic elections. 

Demand for Fulfilment of Earlier Assurances

Abdullah also referred to earlier assurances made regarding the restoration of statehood, pointing out that several public statements had indicated that Jammu and Kashmir would eventually regain its statehood after the completion of the electoral process.

With an elected Assembly now functioning, he questioned why the promised transition had not yet taken place. According to him, the continued uncertainty has generated frustration among political representatives as well as sections of the public.

He urged the Central Government to act on its earlier commitments and restore full statehood at the earliest opportunity, arguing that doing so would strengthen democratic governance and public confidence.

Political Debate Intensifies

The issue has once again become a central topic in Jammu and Kashmir’s political discourse. Opposition leaders and regional parties have repeatedly argued that restoring statehood is essential for ensuring stronger local governance, administrative accountability, and greater public participation in decision-making.

Supporters of the restoration argue that statehood would provide the elected government with wider administrative powers and reinforce democratic institutions. They contend that the move would also help address long-standing political concerns and contribute to greater political stability in the region.

On the other hand, the Central Government has consistently maintained that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time. Officials have previously stated that the process would be carried out after necessary administrative and security considerations are addressed.

Future Course

As discussions over Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status continue, the demand for restoring statehood remains one of the region’s most significant political issues. Omar Abdullah’s latest remarks are expected to intensify political debate, with regional parties continuing to press for the implementation of earlier assurances.

The restoration of statehood is likely to remain at the centre of political discussions in the coming months as elected representatives seek greater administrative authority and clarity regarding the future constitutional framework of Jammu and Kashmir.
