A devastating road accident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Dausa district resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries after a passenger bus collided with a truck and burst into flames in the early hours of Wednesday.
The tragic incident occurred near Dhanawda village under the jurisdiction of Kolwa police station, turning a routine overnight journey into one of the region’s most severe highway disasters in recent months. Emergency responders, police personnel, firefighters, and local administration officials rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations and provide immediate assistance to victims.
Fatal Collision Followed by Massive Fire
According to authorities, the sleeper bus was travelling from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh when it rammed into a truck moving ahead of it on the expressway. The impact of the collision was severe, causing significant damage to the front portion of the bus and triggering a major fire.
The flames spread rapidly through the vehicle, leaving many passengers with little time to react. Several occupants were reportedly asleep when the crash occurred, making escape even more difficult. Panic erupted inside the bus as passengers attempted to flee the burning vehicle.
Officials confirmed that at least seven people lost their lives in the accident. Among the deceased, several victims were trapped inside the bus and succumbed to the fire, while others suffered fatal injuries from the impact of the collision.
Dozens Injured in the Tragedy
More than fifteen passengers sustained injuries, some of them serious. Rescue teams worked quickly to evacuate survivors from the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
The injured were admitted to Dausa District Hospital and other healthcare centres for treatment. Medical teams were placed on alert to manage the influx of casualties and provide emergency care.
Authorities stated that several passengers suffered burns, fractures, and head injuries. The condition of some victims remained critical, prompting concerns that the death toll could rise.
Swift Emergency Response
Police, fire brigade units, and district administration teams reached the accident site shortly after receiving information about the crash. Firefighters battled the blaze for an extended period before bringing it under control.
Rescue operations continued for hours as emergency personnel searched the damaged bus and surrounding area for trapped passengers. Local residents also assisted authorities in the initial rescue efforts.
The expressway witnessed temporary traffic disruption as officials cleared the wreckage and ensured the safety of other motorists using the route.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary assessments suggest that the bus collided with the truck from behind, but investigators are examining multiple factors, including vehicle speed, road conditions, driver alertness, and mechanical issues.
Officials are expected to review evidence from the scene and collect statements from survivors and witnesses as part of the inquiry.
Road safety experts have frequently highlighted the risks associated with overnight long-distance travel, particularly on high-speed corridors where driver fatigue and reduced visibility can contribute to serious accidents.
Growing Concern Over Highway Safety
The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns about safety on India’s expanding network of expressways. While modern highways are designed to reduce travel time and improve connectivity, accidents involving high-speed vehicles often result in catastrophic consequences.
Experts continue to emphasize the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations, regular vehicle maintenance, adequate rest for drivers, and enhanced monitoring systems to prevent such incidents.
As investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash, grieving families await answers while survivors continue to recover from the traumatic event. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance on the country’s busiest transport corridors.
