Assam Records Highest Drug Trafficking Cases in Northeast as Manipur Emerges as Heroin Hotspot

Recent official data on narcotics-related crime trends in Northeast India indicates a shifting and increasingly complex drug trafficking landscape, with Assam recording the highest number of drug trafficking cases in the region, while Manipur has emerged as a major heroin hotspot.

Assam’s position at the top of the list is largely attributed to its strategic geographic location, making it a key transit corridor for illicit drug movement across India’s northeastern states. Its connectivity with multiple neighboring states and proximity to international borders has made it vulnerable to trafficking networks that exploit established transport routes.

Manipur, meanwhile, has been identified as a significant hub for heroin distribution and consumption. Authorities have raised concerns over the state’s growing role in the narcotics supply chain, particularly as part of broader transnational trafficking routes linked to Southeast Asia. The spread of heroin in the region has intensified enforcement challenges for security agencies.  What Are the Drug Trafficking Charges in Ontario? - AGP LLP

Law enforcement agencies across the Northeast have stepped up operations, leading to increased drug seizures and arrests over the past period. However, officials acknowledge that trafficking networks continue to evolve, often operating through well-coordinated inter-state and cross-border channels that are difficult to dismantle.

The region’s difficult terrain, porous borders, and limited surveillance infrastructure have further complicated anti-narcotics efforts. Experts also warn that rising drug availability is contributing to social challenges, particularly among vulnerable youth populations in affected areas.

In response, state and central authorities have intensified coordinated crackdowns, awareness campaigns, and intelligence-sharing mechanisms aimed at disrupting trafficking networks. Multi-agency operations and regional cooperation initiatives are being expanded to strengthen enforcement capabilities.

Despite these efforts, officials emphasize that sustained collaboration between states, improved border management, and community-level interventions are essential to effectively curb the growing narcotics threat in Northeast India.
