India’s former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has raised concerns over the team management’s decision to remove Rishabh Pant from the role of vice-captain in the Indian Test setup. The development has sparked widespread discussion among cricket experts and fans, especially with India preparing for a crucial overseas Test assignment.
Kaif openly questioned the rationale behind the move, suggesting that Pant had shown significant growth as a senior player and leader in the longer format. According to the former batter, Pant’s performances in overseas conditions and his aggressive yet match-winning approach had made him a strong candidate for leadership responsibilities within the team.
The wicketkeeper-batter has been one of India’s standout performers in Test cricket over the past few years. His memorable knocks in Australia, England, and South Africa established him as a dependable middle-order batter capable of changing the course of matches under pressure. Kaif pointed out that Pant’s temperament and experience in difficult conditions should have strengthened his position within the leadership group rather than weakened it.
The debate gained momentum after the Indian selectors announced changes to the Test leadership structure ahead of the upcoming series. While the board has not publicly detailed the exact reasons behind Pant’s removal from the vice-captaincy role, the decision has led to speculation about future leadership plans and team balance.
Kaif emphasized that continuity in leadership is often important for maintaining dressing-room stability. He noted that young players benefit from consistent leadership structures, particularly during demanding overseas tours where tactical awareness and confidence play a major role. The former India cricketer also hinted that Pant’s energetic presence and fearless cricketing style make him an influential figure in the squad, regardless of official designation.
Pant, meanwhile, remains one of India’s most valuable Test players despite facing injuries and periods away from international cricket. Since returning to competitive action, he has gradually regained rhythm and fitness, continuing to be viewed as a key part of India’s red-ball future.
Cricket analysts believe the vice-captaincy discussion reflects a broader transition phase within Indian cricket. With several senior players nearing the latter stages of their careers and younger stars stepping into bigger responsibilities, leadership decisions are expected to remain under close scrutiny.
The selectors’ move has also generated mixed reactions on social media. While some supporters believe the management may be planning for a fresh leadership direction, others agree with Kaif’s assessment that Pant deserved greater backing due to his match-winning credentials and influence in the Test side.
As India prepares for important fixtures in the World Test Championship cycle, all eyes will remain on Pant’s performances and his role within the squad. Even without the vice-captaincy title, the dynamic left-hander is expected to remain one of the central figures in India’s Test ambitions.
