Kharge Accuses Centre of Burdening Citizens Over Fuel Price Hike, Raises Questions on Corporate Favouritism

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on the central government over the recent rise in fuel prices, alleging that ordinary citizens are being unfairly burdened while select corporate interests continue to receive preferential treatment.

Addressing the issue in a strongly worded statement, Kharge accused the government of “robbing common people” through repeated increases in fuel costs, arguing that such price hikes directly impact household budgets, transportation costs, and inflation across essential goods and services. He claimed that rising fuel prices have become a persistent source of financial strain for middle-class and lower-income families, who are already grappling with broader economic pressures.

Kharge further alleged that while the public faces escalating costs, certain large business groups are allegedly benefiting from policy decisions that, according to him, reflect an uneven economic approach. Without naming individuals directly in all instances, he suggested that major corporate entities are receiving favourable treatment, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in economic governance.  Opposition flays fuel-saving appeal of PM Modi

He criticised the government’s economic management, stating that revenue generation through fuel taxation and pricing mechanisms is disproportionately affecting everyday consumers. According to him, indirect taxation on petroleum products continues to be one of the primary drivers of inflation in the country, with cascading effects on food prices, logistics, and transportation-dependent sectors.

The Congress leader also questioned the broader economic priorities of the administration, asserting that policies should focus more on easing the burden on citizens rather than increasing costs through essential commodities like petrol and diesel. He argued that sustained high fuel prices contradict claims of inclusive growth and economic stability.

Reiterating his party’s stance, Kharge called for greater accountability in pricing policies and urged the government to consider relief measures for consumers. He emphasised the need for a more balanced economic framework that does not disproportionately impact vulnerable sections of society.

The remarks come amid ongoing political debate over inflation and fuel pricing, which has remained a contentious issue between opposition parties and the central government. Opposition leaders have repeatedly highlighted fuel prices as a key concern affecting household budgets, while the government has defended its policies citing global crude oil fluctuations and fiscal requirements.
