In a symbolic yet significant move aimed at promoting fuel conservation and sustainable living, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini cycled from his official residence to Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake on Tuesday morning, urging citizens to adopt fuel-saving practices and rely more on public transport and bicycles.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over global energy pressures and follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging citizens and government institutions to reduce fuel consumption and use resources responsibly.

According to official information released by the Haryana government, the chief minister covered the nearly three-kilometre stretch on a bicycle while accompanied by members of his security team, many of whom also chose bicycles for the journey. Upon reaching Sukhna Lake, Saini interacted with local residents during a morning walk and promoted the message of “Healthy India, Healthy Haryana,” linking personal health with environmental responsibility.

The chief minister stated that the Haryana government has already introduced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) focused on fuel conservation across departments. These measures are designed to reduce unnecessary fuel usage in official operations and encourage administrative efficiency.

As part of the broader initiative, Saini announced that he would voluntarily avoid using a government vehicle one day every week. The decision is being viewed as an attempt to set a personal example for both government officials and the public.

The fuel-saving campaign has also led to administrative changes within the Haryana government. Several ministers have reportedly reduced the number of vehicles in their official convoys, while departments have been instructed to minimise unnecessary travel and adopt virtual meetings wherever possible. Government offices have additionally been encouraged to implement work-from-home arrangements in suitable cases to further cut fuel consumption. 

Speaking about the larger context behind the initiative, the chief minister referred to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and their impact on global energy markets. He said that fuel conservation is no longer an issue limited to one country but has become a global concern requiring collective action and responsible consumption.

Saini also appealed directly to citizens to prioritise public transportation such as buses and trains and use private vehicles only when absolutely necessary. He emphasised that adopting bicycles for short-distance travel could contribute significantly toward reducing fuel demand, controlling pollution, and promoting healthier lifestyles.

The Haryana government’s measures reflect a growing trend among political leaders and public institutions across the country responding to calls for environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. In recent days, several officials and ministers in different states have adopted symbolic and practical steps to promote fuel conservation, including cycling to offices and limiting government vehicle usage.
