V D Satheesan Sworn In as Kerala Chief Minister as Congress-Led UDF Returns to Power After a Decade

In a major political transition in Kerala, senior Congress leader V. D. Satheesan took oath as the new Chief Minister on Monday, marking the return of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) to power after ten years. The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, witnessed the presence of several top national and regional political leaders, underscoring the significance of the UDF’s emphatic electoral victory in the state.

The new government assumed office after the UDF secured a decisive mandate in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly elections, ending a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule. Satheesan, who had served as the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, was widely credited with revitalizing the Congress organization in Kerala and steering the alliance to a commanding victory.

Along with Satheesan, a 20-member cabinet was sworn in, comprising representatives from the Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Kerala Congress factions, and other alliance partners. The new ministry reflects a blend of experienced leaders and first-time ministers, signaling an attempt by the UDF to balance governance experience with generational change.

The ceremony drew several prominent political figures from across the country. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attended the event alongside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Chief ministers and senior leaders from Congress-ruled states were also present, highlighting the party’s efforts to project unity and renewed momentum following the Kerala victory.

Thousands of supporters gathered at the venue despite heavy security arrangements and weather concerns. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted amid elaborate preparations, with authorities implementing traffic regulations and public access controls around the state capital. Large screens were reportedly installed across several locations in Thiruvananthapuram to enable the public to witness the event live.  Kerala CM Oath Ceremony LIVE: V D Satheesan swearing-in along with 20 Cabinet Ministers full list at Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram Latest Updates

The return of the UDF government is being viewed as a significant political development in Kerala’s traditionally bipolar political landscape. The alliance’s victory ended the CPI(M)-led LDF’s uninterrupted decade-long rule and reflected voter dissatisfaction over governance issues, economic concerns, and anti-incumbency sentiment.

Political observers believe Satheesan’s elevation to the chief minister’s post represents a generational shift within the Kerala Congress leadership. Known for his aggressive opposition politics and organizational outreach, Satheesan emerged as a consensus choice within the party after the alliance’s landslide performance.

The newly formed government is expected to move quickly on key electoral promises made during the campaign. Among the major assurances highlighted by the UDF were enhanced welfare pensions, financial support schemes for women and students, expanded healthcare coverage, and assistance for young entrepreneurs. The first cabinet meeting is expected to focus on implementing some of these commitments.

The composition of the cabinet also indicates the UDF’s emphasis on social and regional representation. Several new faces have been inducted into the ministry, while experienced leaders are likely to handle crucial portfolios such as Home, Finance, and Public Works.

The political transition in Kerala comes at a time when the Congress party is seeking to strengthen its position nationally. The party leadership has projected the Kerala victory as evidence of growing public support and organizational revival in key states.

With Satheesan now formally taking charge, attention will shift toward the new government’s administrative priorities and its ability to deliver on campaign promises in a politically sensitive and economically challenging environment.
