At least nine people have been killed after a powerful landslide struck a mining area in Indonesia, following days of intense rainfall that destabilised the surrounding terrain, according to local disaster authorities. Emergency teams have been deployed to the remote site as search-and-rescue operations continue amid fears that additional workers may still be trapped under debris.

Sudden collapse triggered by heavy rain

Authorities said the incident occurred when saturated soil on steep mining slopes gave way, sending large volumes of earth and debris cascading into active work zones. Workers at the site were caught off guard as the landslide struck without warning, burying equipment and parts of the mining operation.

Local officials confirmed that nine fatalities have been recovered so far, while several others were injured. Rescue personnel are still combing through unstable ground in difficult weather conditions, slowing down recovery efforts. 

Rescue operations hampered by terrain and weather

Search-and-rescue teams, including disaster response units and local volunteers, were quickly deployed following reports of the collapse. However, ongoing rainfall and unstable slopes have made access to the affected zone extremely challenging.

Heavy machinery is being used to remove mud and debris, but officials warned that secondary landslides remain a serious risk. Medical teams have been stationed nearby to treat survivors and assist in recovery efforts.
