Air India is set to significantly reduce its global operations by cancelling and suspending around 400 international flights every month between June and August, in response to mounting operational challenges driven by rising fuel prices and ongoing geopolitical instability affecting global air routes.

The airline’s decision reflects a broader strain on the aviation sector, where long-haul international services have become increasingly expensive due to rerouted flight paths, restricted airspace access, and surging aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs.

A key factor behind the sweeping schedule reduction is the continuing conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted established aviation corridors. Airspace closures and heightened security risks linked to regional tensions have forced airlines to take longer, fuel-intensive detours on many international routes.

These extended flight paths have significantly increased operational expenses, particularly on ultra-long-haul routes connecting India with North America and Europe. In addition, elevated global jet fuel prices have further strained profitability, making several routes commercially unsustainable in their current form.

Direct services between Delhi and Chicago have been suspended

Flights between India and key US destinations such as Newark and New York (on select routes) face temporary suspensions or reductions

Services to cities including Paris, Rome, Milan, Vienna, Zurich, and Copenhagen in Europe will see reduced frequencies

Routes connecting India with Australia, including Sydney and Melbourne, will also operate fewer weekly flights

Several Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asian routes are being adjusted or temporarily suspended due to lower demand and operational constraints

Despite these cuts, the airline continues to maintain significant international connectivity, with over a thousand flights scheduled globally each month.

Air India has stated that the decision is aimed at stabilising its international network and reducing last-minute disruptions for passengers during a period of global uncertainty.

The airline is also working on rebalancing its route structure by prioritising high-demand corridors and ensuring better aircraft utilisation on viable routes.
