The mysterious deaths of four members of a Mumbai family have taken a disturbing turn after investigators discovered a bottle of rat poison inside the victims’ residence, intensifying suspicions surrounding the tragic incident that shocked the city.
Police officials are now probing multiple angles, including possible murder, accidental poisoning, or a suicide pact, after forensic reports confirmed the presence of zinc phosphide — a highly toxic substance commonly used in rodenticides — in the bodies of all four deceased family members as well as in a watermelon they consumed shortly before falling critically ill.
The victims were identified as Abdulla Dokadia, his wife Nasreen Dokadia, and their two daughters, Ayesha and Zainab, who lived in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area. According to investigators, the family had hosted relatives for dinner on the night before the tragedy. While the guests reportedly ate the same meal and remained unharmed, the family later consumed watermelon after the visitors had left. Within hours, all four developed severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea, before succumbing rapidly.
Initial suspicion had centered on food contamination, particularly the watermelon. However, a detailed forensic examination later confirmed that the deaths were caused by zinc phosphide poisoning rather than ordinary food poisoning. Investigators found traces of the toxic chemical in both the victims’ viscera samples and leftover watermelon recovered from the home.
The investigation deepened further after police recovered a bottle of rat poison from the family’s residence. Surprisingly, officials stated that the ingredients listed on the bottle did not mention zinc phosphide, creating fresh confusion about how the deadly toxin entered the household. Authorities have now sent the recovered bottle for forensic analysis to determine whether it contained undisclosed toxic substances or whether another source of poison was involved. ![]()
Police officials revealed that the old residential building where the family lived had a known rodent problem, making the presence of rat poison in the home not entirely unusual. However, investigators are now focused on identifying who may have introduced zinc phosphide into the watermelon and whether the contamination was deliberate.
Forensic experts involved in the case explained that zinc phosphide is an extremely dangerous poison that releases toxic phosphine gas when it comes into contact with moisture or stomach acid. The substance can prove fatal within hours and often produces symptoms resembling severe gastroenteritis or food poisoning, complicating early diagnosis and treatment.
Authorities are also examining CCTV footage, questioning relatives and acquaintances, and tracing local sales of rodenticides in an attempt to determine how the poison was obtained. Investigators are additionally reviewing the victims’ mobile phones and personal communications to identify any possible signs of distress, conflict, financial pressure, or threats prior to the incident.
While police have not ruled out any possibility, officials stated that no immediate evidence has yet emerged suggesting that the family planned a collective suicide. At the same time, investigators are cautious about drawing conclusions until forensic analysis of all recovered materials is completed.
The case has sparked widespread concern over food safety, the availability of toxic rodenticides, and the possibility of deliberate poisoning. The shocking deaths and the unanswered questions surrounding the contaminated watermelon continue to grip Mumbai as investigators attempt to uncover the truth behind one of the city’s most puzzling recent tragedies.
