A new study has found that the plants moringa oleifera, also known as the three of life, can remove up to 98% of microplastics from drinking water. This discovers could reduce need for expensive water filters in the future.
As reported by Science.Org, researchers at the Institute of Science and Technology of São Paulo State University found that moringa seeds found that they work as well as common chemical treatments used in water by clumping harmful particles together, making them easier to remove. Reportedly in some case, it even worked better than chemicals like aluminum sulfate. Scientists say this natural method is safe because chemical treatments can leave harmful residues and are not eco-friendly. Moringa on the other hand, is biodegradable and safe for both humans and the environment.
Microplastics are a growing global problem. Reportedly millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, and tiny plastic particles are now found in water, food, and even inside the human body. These particles may cause health problems like digestive issues and reduced fertility.
Because of these risks, experts are looking for safer and sustainable solutions. As per reports, moringa is now seen as a promising, low-cost, and eco-friendly way to clean water, especially in areas where advanced filtration systems are not available.
Researchers believe that using moringa could save money, reduce pollution, and provide cleaner drinking water for people around the world.
