House Democrats on Wednesday unveiled six articles of impeachment against US defense secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of serious misconduct related to the Iran war and his handling of classified information.
The resolution, led by Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, alleges “high crimes and misdemeanors,” including unauthorized military actions, abuse of power, and violations of international law.
According to the impeachment articles, Hegseth is accused of:
Waging an unauthorised war against Iran and endangering US service members
Targeting civilians and violating the laws of armed conflict
Mishandling classified military information, including sensitive disclosures
Obstructing congressional oversight
Abusing power and politicizing the armed forces
Bringing disrepute to the US military
Lawmakers also cited specific incidents, including alleged civilian casualties in Iran and concerns over military operations in regions like the Caribbean and Venezuela.
In a statement, Ansari said Hegseth had violated his oath of office, endangered US troops, and authorised unlawful military actions, including strikes on civilians.
She emphasised that only Congress has the authority to declare war, arguing that his actions warrant immediate removal.
The Pentagon has dismissed the move as politically motivated, calling it a distraction.
The impeachment push comes amid growing criticism of the US administration’s handling of the Iran conflict, with Democrats increasingly raising concerns over civilian casualties, military strategy, and transparency.
