Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has demanded that Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav apologise to the Jat community over his recent remarks directed at Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary.
Mayawati said Yadav’s comments were not merely a political attack on the RLD or its leader but were also disrespectful to the wider Jat community and the family of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. Her intervention has added another layer to an increasingly sharp political exchange in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Mayawati Criticises Akhilesh’s Remarks
In a statement on Saturday, Mayawati described Akhilesh Yadav’s comment about the RLD and Jayant Chaudhary as improper, indecent and shameful. She was referring to Yadav’s remark that his party had transformed its former political ally from a “chavanni” — a four-anna coin — into a rupee.
The statement was interpreted as a criticism of the political rise of Jayant Chaudhary and the RLD after their association with the SP. Mayawati argued that the language used by the SP chief went beyond ordinary political criticism.
She said Akhilesh should apologise to Jayant Chaudhary and the RLD, but also to the Jat community because of the political and social legacy associated with the Chaudhary Charan Singh family.
Charan Singh’s Political Legacy at Centre of Row
Jayant Chaudhary is the grandson of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and the son of former Union minister Ajit Singh. Charan Singh remains an important political figure for large sections of the farming community, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh, where his political legacy continues to carry considerable significance.

Mayawati alleged that the experience showed the SP’s tendency to enter alliances for political advantage and reconsider its position once its immediate objectives had been achieved.
Her latest remarks against Akhilesh Yadav therefore form part of a much broader political rivalry between the BSP and SP, rather than being limited to the current dispute involving Jayant Chaudhary.

Mayawati also criticised the SP’s political strategy centred on the PDA formulation — referring to backward classes, Dalits and minorities.

She further alleged that previous SP governments had failed to adequately address the concerns of Dalits, backward classes, minorities and sections of the upper castes.
