Mayawati Demands Akhilesh Yadav Apologise to Jats Over Remarks on Jayant Chaudhary

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has demanded that Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav apologise to the Jat community over his recent remarks directed at Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary.

Mayawati said Yadav’s comments were not merely a political attack on the RLD or its leader but were also disrespectful to the wider Jat community and the family of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. Her intervention has added another layer to an increasingly sharp political exchange in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Mayawati Criticises Akhilesh’s Remarks

In a statement on Saturday, Mayawati described Akhilesh Yadav’s comment about the RLD and Jayant Chaudhary as improper, indecent and shameful. She was referring to Yadav’s remark that his party had transformed its former political ally from a “chavanni” — a four-anna coin — into a rupee.

The statement was interpreted as a criticism of the political rise of Jayant Chaudhary and the RLD after their association with the SP. Mayawati argued that the language used by the SP chief went beyond ordinary political criticism.

She said Akhilesh should apologise to Jayant Chaudhary and the RLD, but also to the Jat community because of the political and social legacy associated with the Chaudhary Charan Singh family.

Charan Singh’s Political Legacy at Centre of Row

Jayant Chaudhary is the grandson of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and the son of former Union minister Ajit Singh. Charan Singh remains an important political figure for large sections of the farming community, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh, where his political legacy continues to carry considerable significance.

Mayawati’s reference to the family is therefore politically significant. By framing the dispute as an issue involving respect for Charan Singh’s legacy and the Jat community, she has broadened what began as a dispute between political leaders.

The controversy comes at a time when political parties are already working to strengthen their social coalitions in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Mayawati Launches Wider Attack on Samajwadi Party

Mayawati’s criticism was not limited to the latest remarks. She also accused the Samajwadi Party of following what she described as narrow and caste-oriented politics.

According to her, the SP’s approach has involved political hostility not only towards rival parties but, at times, towards its own former allies. She alleged that such politics had weakened opposition forces while indirectly benefiting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BSP chief also revisited the history of the SP-BSP relationship, pointing to the collapse of the two parties’ alliance in the 1990s. She referred specifically to the 1995 Lucknow State Guest House incident, which occurred amid tensions following the breakdown of the alliance.

Mayawati said the episode demonstrated the seriousness of the differences between the two parties and alleged that the SP’s attitude had remained unchanged over the years.  BSP president Mayawati opposes 'creamy layer' idea for SCs, STs, hits out at RSS - The Hindu

2019 Alliance Also Recalled

The BSP leader also referred to the alliance between the SP and BSP during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The two parties had joined hands in an attempt to challenge the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, but the alliance failed to deliver the electoral results expected by its leadership and was subsequently discontinued.

Mayawati alleged that the experience showed the SP’s tendency to enter alliances for political advantage and reconsider its position once its immediate objectives had been achieved.

Her latest remarks against Akhilesh Yadav therefore form part of a much broader political rivalry between the BSP and SP, rather than being limited to the current dispute involving Jayant Chaudhary.

Attack on SP’s PDA Strategy

Mayawati also criticised the SP’s political strategy centred on the PDA formulation — referring to backward classes, Dalits and minorities.

She alleged that the meaning and political emphasis of the acronym had been altered by the SP according to electoral requirements. According to Mayawati, the party has sought to present itself differently to different sections of society depending on the political circumstances.

She further alleged that previous SP governments had failed to adequately address the concerns of Dalits, backward classes, minorities and sections of the upper castes.

These claims are part of the BSP’s continuing effort to position itself as an independent political force in Uttar Pradesh and to distinguish its electoral strategy from that of the SP.

Political Significance of the Jat Community

The dispute involving Jayant Chaudhary has particular significance because of the RLD’s traditional political influence among sections of the Jat electorate in western Uttar Pradesh.

The region has historically played an important role in the political fortunes of the RLD and the Chaudhary Charan Singh family. Jayant Chaudhary has inherited a political legacy that is closely associated with farmers, rural communities and Jat voters in the region.

Consequently, criticism directed at the RLD leadership can have implications beyond a conventional exchange between political parties, particularly when community identity and political representation become part of the debate.

Mayawati’s demand for an apology appears aimed at highlighting precisely this dimension of the controversy.

SP-RLD Relations Remain a Political Flashpoint

The latest dispute also reflects the changing relationship between the Samajwadi Party and the RLD.

The two parties had previously worked together, including during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. However, their political relationship subsequently changed, with Jayant Chaudhary moving away from the SP and developing a separate political alignment.

The latest exchange illustrates how former allies can become political opponents as electoral calculations change.

For the SP, maintaining support among different social groups in western Uttar Pradesh will remain an important challenge. For the RLD, protecting its political identity and relationship with its traditional support base remains equally significant.

Mayawati’s Intervention Adds to Political Contest

Mayawati’s decision to intervene in the controversy gives the issue an additional political dimension.

The BSP has been seeking to maintain an independent political position in Uttar Pradesh while monitoring the evolving equations among the SP, RLD and BJP. Her public defence of Jayant Chaudhary does not by itself establish any formal electoral understanding between the BSP and RLD, but it demonstrates how political parties are using emerging controversies to reinforce their positions among particular voter groups.

By demanding an apology from Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati has also sought to portray the SP as a party that, in her assessment, has failed to maintain respectful relations with political allies and social communities.

Focus Turns to 2027 Uttar Pradesh Elections

The controversy comes as political preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections gather pace.

The state is India’s most electorally significant political battleground, and western Uttar Pradesh is particularly important because of its complex combination of caste, community, rural and agrarian interests.

The SP, BSP, RLD and BJP are all expected to focus heavily on building broader social coalitions before the election. In that context, disputes involving prominent political families and influential communities can quickly acquire wider electoral significance.

For Akhilesh Yadav, the controversy could create an additional challenge if the dispute continues to resonate among Jat voters. For Jayant Chaudhary, the issue provides an opportunity to reinforce his political connection with the community and the legacy of his grandfather.

For Mayawati, the episode offers another platform to criticise the SP and question its political strategy.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus is on whether Akhilesh Yadav will respond to Mayawati’s demand and issue an apology.

The controversy could either remain a short-lived political exchange or develop into a larger issue as parties prepare for the 2027 election. Its significance will largely depend on how political leaders and community organisations respond in the coming days.

Mayawati’s intervention has already expanded the dispute from a disagreement involving Akhilesh Yadav and Jayant Chaudhary into a broader debate about political language, community respect, alliances and the legacy of Chaudhary Charan Singh.

With Uttar Pradesh heading towards another closely watched electoral contest, the episode highlights the continuing importance of community-based political equations and the increasingly competitive efforts by parties to consolidate support across the state.
