A family dispute over a mobile phone ended in a devastating tragedy in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, where a 19-year-old man and both his parents died after falling from a hilltop during an extended attempt to prevent the teenager from taking his own life.
The incident occurred on Friday at Khawadya Hill in the Tisgaon area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Waluj MIDC police station. According to police, the teenager had gone to the hilltop following an argument with his parents over his demand for a new mobile phone.
Concerned about their son, his parents followed him to the hill and tried to convince him to return home. As the situation escalated, police personnel, fire brigade teams, villagers and local representatives also reached the location and joined the effort to persuade the teenager to move away from the edge.
Three-hour rescue effort ends in tragedy
Police said the teenager remained near the edge of the hill for nearly three hours despite repeated appeals from those present. Rescue personnel attempted to position a safety net at the foothill, but the operation proved difficult because the teenager repeatedly changed his position.
Authorities said that directly attempting to restrain him also carried significant risks for the rescuers because of the steep terrain and the teenager’s unpredictable movements.
Local residents and village representatives also tried to communicate with him and persuade him to reconsider his decision. Despite the prolonged efforts, the teenager remained determined to jump.
After 1 pm, his father gradually moved closer to him and reportedly attempted to persuade him to step away from the edge. Police said that the teenager suddenly jumped, and his father fell while trying to catch or save him.
The incident then took another tragic turn when the mother, after seeing her husband and son fall from the hilltop, also jumped, police said.
All three family members died in the incident.
Dispute reportedly began over a mobile phone
According to the preliminary information available to police, the teenager had gone to Khawadya Hill at around 10 am after an argument with his parents concerning a mobile phone.
A separate report suggested that the dispute may have involved a demand for money connected to an iPhone purchase and its instalments. However, these additional details were not independently established by police in the initial account of the incident.
The circumstances highlight how an apparently domestic disagreement escalated rapidly into a life-threatening situation. Police and local residents attempted to intervene for several hours before the incident could be brought under control.
Police and villagers joined rescue efforts
The response involved multiple groups, including police officers, fire brigade personnel and villagers. People at the site tried different approaches to persuade the teenager to move away from the dangerous location.
Sanjay Jadhav, a former sarpanch of Tisgaon village who was among those involved in the effort, said that the teenager was not responding to attempts to reason with him.
Police Inspector Rameshwar Gade of the Waluj MIDC police station said the authorities had made extensive arrangements to try to prevent the teenager from falling. However, the teenager’s movements made it difficult for rescuers to determine where he might move next.
The police also faced the challenge of ensuring that any intervention did not place rescuers themselves in danger.
Bodies recovered, further formalities underway
Following the incident, the bodies of the three family members were recovered from the site and sent for the required formalities.
Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the events leading up to the teenager’s arrival at the hilltop and the sequence of events during the rescue attempt.
The incident has left the local community shocked, particularly because the teenager’s parents had followed him to the hill in an apparent attempt to protect him. What began as a family disagreement ultimately developed into a prolonged emergency that ended with the deaths of all three members.
The tragedy also underscores the importance of immediate intervention when someone threatens self-harm. In such situations, keeping the person engaged, maintaining a safe distance, involving trained emergency responders and avoiding sudden physical intervention can be critical.
