The Territorial Army has become a vital component of India’s defence structure by providing additional military strength during emergencies while also contributing significantly to humanitarian and nation-building initiatives, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday.
Addressing the importance of the force, Singh highlighted that the Territorial Army is not limited to supporting the armed forces during periods of heightened security challenges but has expanded its role in several areas, including disaster management, environmental conservation and community-oriented activities.
The Defence Minister described the Territorial Army as a symbol of the “citizen soldier” concept, where individuals from civilian backgrounds voluntarily contribute their services to national security while continuing their regular professions. He said the force reflects the spirit of public participation in strengthening the country.
According to Singh, the Territorial Army provides additional military capacity whenever required, allowing the nation to respond effectively during crises and emergencies. Its members have played an important role in supporting the armed forces during various situations and have demonstrated commitment towards national service.
Apart from defence-related responsibilities, the Territorial Army has actively participated in relief and rehabilitation operations during natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and other emergencies. Its personnel have supported local administrations by assisting affected communities and helping restore essential services.
The Defence Minister also emphasised the force’s contribution towards environmental protection. Territorial Army units have been involved in activities related to afforestation, conservation of natural resources and ecological restoration, highlighting their broader responsibility towards sustainable development.
Singh stated that these efforts align with the government’s vision of a developed India, where national progress depends not only on economic growth but also on security, environmental responsibility and active citizen participation.
The Territorial Army, established as a volunteer reserve force of the Indian Army, continues to serve as a bridge between civilian society and the military. Its members undergo military training and remain prepared to serve whenever the country requires additional support.
