Farmers and several Kannada organisations staged protests near the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir on Friday, opposing the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s (CWMA) directive to release water to Tamil Nadu. The demonstrations were held amid growing concerns among farmers over water availability for agricultural activities in the region.

The protesters gathered near the KRS dam, raising objections to the water-sharing decision and demanding that priority be given to the needs of farmers in the Cauvery basin areas of Karnataka. They expressed concerns that releasing additional water to Tamil Nadu could affect irrigation requirements, particularly during periods of limited water availability.

Several Kannada groups joined hands with farmer organisations during the protest, intensifying their opposition to the CWMA order. Demonstrators called for a review of the water release decision and urged authorities to consider the ground situation, including the challenges faced by farmers dependent on the Cauvery river for cultivation.

Authorities made extensive security arrangements in view of the protests. Around 1,500 police personnel were deployed near the KRS reservoir and surrounding areas to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents. Security forces monitored the situation closely as protesters gathered at the site.

The Cauvery water-sharing issue has historically remained a sensitive matter between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with both states depending heavily on the river for agriculture, drinking water supply, and other essential needs. Decisions regarding water release often lead to political and public reactions, particularly during periods of water stress.

Farmers in Karnataka have repeatedly highlighted concerns about protecting local irrigation needs and ensuring sufficient water storage in reservoirs before releasing water to neighbouring states. Protesters said that the interests of farming communities should be considered while implementing interstate water-sharing decisions.

The authorities continued to monitor developments around the KRS reservoir as the protest remained focused on opposing the CWMA’s direction and seeking greater consideration for Karnataka’s agricultural requirements.
