The principal accused in the shocking rape and murder case from Baruipur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district was killed during a police encounter in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said. The development comes just days after the brutal crime triggered widespread public outrage and intensified demands for swift justice.

According to the police, the accused was taken to the crime scene as part of the ongoing investigation to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the alleged rape and murder. During the process, the accused reportedly attempted to escape from police custody and allegedly attacked officers in an effort to flee.

Police officials stated that the accused managed to snatch a weapon from one of the personnel escorting him and attempted to fire at the officers. In response, the police opened fire in self-defence. The accused sustained bullet injuries during the exchange and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Despite efforts by doctors, he was declared dead shortly after being admitted to the hospital.

Police Describe Sequence of Events

Investigators said the encounter occurred while officers were carrying out a reconstruction of the crime to verify the accused’s statements and gather additional evidence.
