In a major narcotics interception at Mumbai’s international airport, customs authorities have arrested a Kerala-based model and beauty pageant runner-up after allegedly recovering high-grade hydroponic cannabis valued at approximately ₹11.82 crore from her luggage. The seizure has drawn significant attention due to the accused’s background in the banking sector and participation in beauty competitions.

The woman, identified as Harsha Sunny, arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok during the early hours of June 11. Officials from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and the Customs Department reportedly became suspicious during routine passenger screening and decided to conduct a detailed inspection of her baggage.

Suspicious Behaviour Led to Detailed Screening

According to investigators, the passenger’s conduct during the customs clearance process raised concerns among officials. Acting on their observations, authorities subjected her luggage to a thorough examination.

During the search, officers allegedly discovered multiple vacuum-sealed packets concealed inside a trolley bag. The packets contained a green plant-based substance that was subsequently tested using narcotics detection kits. Preliminary examinations reportedly confirmed the substance to be hydroponic cannabis, a highly potent form of marijuana cultivated under controlled conditions.

Authorities said the seized contraband weighed approximately 11.8 kilograms and carried an estimated illegal market value of ₹11.82 crore.

High-Value Drug Consignment Hidden in Luggage

Investigators revealed that the narcotics were carefully packed in vacuum-sealed bags, a method commonly used by smugglers to reduce odor and avoid detection during transit. The packaging indicated a level of sophistication often associated with organized trafficking networks operating across international borders.

Officials suspect that the consignment was intended for distribution within India, although the final destination and intended recipients remain under investigation.

The seizure represents one of the larger recent recoveries of hydroponic cannabis at an Indian airport and highlights the growing concern among enforcement agencies regarding the smuggling of premium-grade narcotics from Southeast Asian countries. 

Accused Claims She Was Unaware of Contents

During preliminary questioning, the accused reportedly maintained that she was unaware of the contents of the bag. She allegedly told investigators that she had met an individual during her overseas trip who requested that she transport the luggage to India.

Authorities are currently verifying these claims and examining whether the accused knowingly participated in the operation or was used as a courier by a larger trafficking syndicate.

Investigators are also working to identify the person who allegedly handed over the luggage and determine whether additional individuals were involved in coordinating the movement of the contraband.

Legal Action Under NDPS Act

Following the seizure, customs officials formally arrested the accused under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, one of India’s strictest laws dealing with drug-related offenses.

She was later produced before a court, which remanded her to judicial custody pending further investigation.

Given the quantity and value of the seized narcotics, the case is being treated as a serious offense. Law enforcement agencies are expected to examine travel records, communication data, and financial transactions to uncover possible links to an international drug trafficking network.

Growing Concern Over Hydroponic Cannabis Smuggling

Hydroponic cannabis has emerged as a significant concern for narcotics enforcement agencies due to its high potency and substantial black-market value. Smugglers frequently attempt to bring such substances into India through international airports using concealed baggage, false declarations, or courier networks.

Authorities have intensified surveillance on flights arriving from regions identified as major transit points for narcotics trafficking. Recent enforcement actions indicate a broader crackdown on cross-border drug smuggling operations that target major Indian cities as distribution hubs.

Officials believe the latest seizure could provide crucial leads into a larger network involved in the transportation and distribution of premium-grade cannabis across the country.

The Customs Department, along with other enforcement agencies, is continuing its investigation to determine the full scope of the operation. Authorities are examining whether the seized consignment was part of a larger smuggling chain and whether similar shipments have previously entered the country through comparable routes.

As the probe progresses, investigators are expected to focus on identifying associates, financial backers, and international contacts connected to the case. Further arrests have not been ruled out.
