A devastating fire at an elderly care facility in Sri Lanka has left at least 11 people dead and several others injured, raising serious concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness at institutions caring for vulnerable populations.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening at an elderly care home located in Anguruwatota, a town in Sri Lanka’s Kalutara District, approximately 65 kilometers southeast of Colombo. Authorities confirmed that the fire broke out around 5:30 p.m., rapidly engulfing parts of the facility and triggering a large-scale rescue operation.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

According to officials, ten residents were found dead at the scene after the flames were brought under control. Another resident later succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, bringing the death toll to 11.

Emergency responders, police personnel, local residents, and volunteers worked together to rescue those trapped inside the building. Authorities said that 51 residents were successfully evacuated from the facility and moved to safety during the operation.
