The Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expand its probe into the 2024 RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case by constituting a fresh, specialised investigation team, intensifying judicial scrutiny into alleged lapses and possible attempts to suppress or distort key evidence.

The directive comes amid continuing judicial oversight of one of the most sensitive criminal cases in recent years, which has already seen multiple investigative transitions, departmental actions against officials, and sustained legal petitions from the victim’s family seeking a deeper and more transparent inquiry.

According to the court’s latest order, the CBI has been instructed to form a new team dedicated specifically to examining procedural irregularities, gaps in the initial investigation conducted by state authorities, and allegations that critical evidence may not have been properly secured or was mishandled in the early stages of the case. The court has also sought greater accountability regarding the conduct of officials involved in the initial probe.

The RG Kar case pertains to the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, an incident that triggered nationwide outrage, widespread protests by the medical community, and intense political debate over safety in public institutions. 

Following the incident, the investigation was initially handled by state police before being transferred to the CBI after the Calcutta High Court raised concerns over the credibility and fairness of the early probe. Since then, the case has remained under continuous judicial review, with courts repeatedly examining the progress and quality of the investigation.

In recent hearings, the High Court has expressed concern over allegations that certain aspects of the case may have been “hushed up,” prompting it to push for deeper scrutiny into the handling of records, forensic materials, and witness statements. The court has also directed the CBI to produce all investigative materials, including documents, electronic evidence, audio-visual records, and forensic reports, for detailed examination.

The latest order is seen as an effort to ensure that no procedural gaps or investigative shortcomings compromise the integrity of the final findings. The court has also emphasised that the probe must address not only the direct crime but also any potential administrative or systemic failures that may have contributed to lapses in the investigation.

The case has already witnessed significant developments, including arrests, departmental proceedings against police officials, and parallel inquiries into alleged corruption and administrative irregularities linked to the hospital’s management. Multiple benches of the High Court have been engaged with related petitions, reflecting the complexity and continuing legal sensitivity of the matter.

With the formation of a new CBI team now mandated, the investigation is expected to enter a more intensive phase focused on consolidating evidence, reassessing earlier findings, and addressing unanswered questions raised by the victim’s family and petitioners.
