Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has stirred a fresh political controversy after urging state police officials not to produce suspected illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators before courts, but instead hand them over directly to the Border Security Force for further action.
Speaking on the issue of border security and alleged infiltration across the India–Bangladesh border, Adhikari alleged that repeated judicial procedures were slowing down enforcement efforts. He claimed that instead of engaging in lengthy court proceedings, law enforcement authorities should prioritize swift transfer of detained individuals to the Border Security Force, which is responsible for guarding India’s international boundary.
His remarks were made in the backdrop of ongoing political tension in West Bengal over illegal immigration, a topic that has consistently triggered sharp exchanges between ruling and opposition parties. Adhikari argued that the state’s law enforcement mechanism was “wasting valuable time” in legal formalities, which, according to him, weakens border security enforcement.
The opposition leader further asserted that the issue of infiltration is not merely administrative but directly linked to national security. He maintained that suspected infiltrators should be immediately handled by central border forces, who have the jurisdiction and operational capability to deal with cross-border security threats.
The statement has drawn significant political attention, with critics arguing that bypassing judicial processes could raise serious legal and constitutional concerns. Legal experts point out that any individual detained on Indian soil is entitled to due process under the law, including production before a magistrate and judicial review of detention.
Meanwhile, officials associated with the West Bengal Police have not issued an official response to Adhikari’s remarks. However, the issue has reignited a broader debate on coordination between state police forces and central agencies in managing illegal immigration and border security challenges.
Political observers note that the remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing political confrontation in the state, where allegations related to infiltration and voter demographics frequently dominate electoral discourse. The issue also comes at a time when border management continues to remain a sensitive topic in national politics.
As the debate escalates, the focus is expected to remain on how law enforcement agencies balance national security concerns with constitutional safeguards and judicial procedures.
