The death of a 33-year-old woman from Noida in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal has triggered widespread outrage after her family alleged that she was murdered over dowry demands by her husband and in-laws. The woman was found hanging at her matrimonial home in the Katara Hills area earlier this week, prompting protests, demands for a second post-mortem, and calls for an impartial investigation outside the state.
According to police officials, the deceased had married a Bhopal-based lawyer in December 2025 after reportedly meeting him through a dating application in 2024. Following the marriage, she shifted from Noida to Bhopal to live with her husband and his family. Her family members, however, claimed that she had been facing harassment and abuse after the wedding and wanted to return to Noida.
The case gained further attention after the woman’s relatives staged a protest outside the official residence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Bhopal, demanding justice and stricter action against the accused. The family alleged that the victim’s husband and mother-in-law, a retired district judge, were responsible for her death and attempted to destroy evidence after the incident.
Family Alleges Harassment and Assault
The victim’s relatives claimed that she remained in contact with them on the night of her death and had spoken to family members just hours before the incident. During those conversations, she reportedly expressed distress and informed them about ongoing harassment at her marital home.
Her family further alleged that repeated attempts to contact her after the call went unanswered. Later, they were informed that she had allegedly died by suicide. The family rejected that version of events and insisted that there were signs of physical assault on her body.
The victim’s brother and father have publicly accused the in-laws of subjecting her to mental and physical abuse. They also claimed that crucial evidence linked to the incident may have been tampered with before police intervention.
Demand for Second Post-Mortem
One of the key demands raised by the family is a second post-mortem examination at AIIMS Delhi. The family argued that they do not trust the initial forensic process conducted in Bhopal and want an independent medical review to establish the exact cause of death.
The victim’s body reportedly remained in the mortuary for several days while the family sought permission and support for the second autopsy. During the protest outside the chief minister’s residence, government officials reportedly assured the family that the matter would be investigated fairly.
Calls for Transfer of Trial Outside Madhya Pradesh
The deceased woman’s relatives have also demanded that the legal proceedings be transferred outside Madhya Pradesh to ensure neutrality in the investigation and trial. They expressed concerns over the influence allegedly wielded by the accused family because of their legal and judicial background.
The involvement of a retired judge and a practicing lawyer has intensified public scrutiny of the case, with activists and social media users demanding accountability and transparency from investigating agencies. )
Police Form SIT to Probe Case
In response to the growing controversy, Bhopal police constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate allegations related to dowry harassment, physical assault, and destruction of evidence.
Police officials confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the husband and mother-in-law under provisions related to dowry death and harassment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are examining multiple angles, including the victim’s communications before her death and forensic evidence collected from the residence.
Authorities also stated that efforts are underway to trace and question the accused husband, while legal proceedings related to anticipatory bail have already begun in court.
Rising Concerns Over Dowry-Related Crimes
The case has reignited concerns about dowry-related violence and domestic abuse in India despite existing legal safeguards. Women’s rights groups and legal experts have called for faster investigations and stricter implementation of laws aimed at preventing harassment linked to marriage and dowry demands.
The incident has also triggered broader discussions around the vulnerability of women in abusive marriages and the challenges families often face while seeking justice in cases involving influential individuals.
As the investigation continues, the family remains firm in its demand for an independent probe, a second autopsy, and strict punishment for those found responsible.
