Goa Congress leader Dr Ketan Bhatikar, aged 38, died after a suspected snakebite incident near the Goa–Karnataka border on Thursday night, police officials confirmed on Friday. His sudden demise has triggered shock across the state’s political circles, with party leaders and supporters expressing deep grief over the loss of a prominent and rising political figure.
According to officials, the incident occurred when Bhatikar was travelling towards Dandeli village in Karnataka. While passing through the Karmal Ghat area on the inter-state border, he reportedly got down from his vehicle for an unspecified reason. It was at this point that he is believed to have been bitten by a venomous snake.
He was immediately rushed to the Primary Health Centre in Dharbandora, Goa. However, medical staff declared him brought dead upon arrival, as his condition had deteriorated rapidly by the time he received treatment.
Preliminary reports suggest that the leader showed no signs of responsiveness when examined by doctors. Medical observations, including physical symptoms such as discoloration, raised suspicion of a fatal snakebite. His body was later sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, with authorities keeping all possible angles under review.
Police have stated that investigations are ongoing, and while a snakebite is the primary suspected cause, a final confirmation will depend on forensic and medical reports.
Bhatikar was a well-known political figure in Goa and had recently been active in state politics. He was the Congress party’s candidate in the Ponda Assembly by-election, which was later cancelled following a court ruling. He had also recently joined the Congress party after previously being associated with another political organisation, and was considered an emerging leader within the party’s Goa unit.
His political journey had gained attention in recent months due to his active involvement in constituency-level campaigns and organisational work. Party insiders described him as a committed worker who had been increasingly visible in public engagements ahead of the by-election.
Following news of his death, condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Senior leaders of the state Congress unit expressed deep sorrow, describing his passing as an “irreparable loss” to the organisation. Leaders recalled his dedication to public service and his efforts to strengthen the party at the grassroots level.
Local residents and supporters also gathered to pay tribute, remembering him as a young leader with growing influence in Goa politics. The sudden nature of his death has intensified concerns about wildlife encounters in forested and hilly regions along the Goa–Karnataka border, an area known for dense vegetation and occasional snake sightings.
Authorities are expected to complete post-mortem procedures and submit a detailed report to confirm the exact circumstances leading to his death.
