A shocking incident of alleged molestation and physical assault involving two women in southeast Delhi’s Nehru Place area has triggered widespread concern over women’s safety in the national capital. Delhi Police have detained four men in connection with the case after the victims accused a group of individuals of harassment, physical violence, and abusive behavior during the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to police officials, the incident took place near a tea stall close to a prominent hotel in Nehru Place at around 6:30 am. The two women, reportedly in their twenties, had stepped out after attending work-related engagements when they were allegedly approached and verbally harassed by a group of men.
The women claimed that the situation escalated rapidly after they objected to the alleged inappropriate comments and catcalling. According to their statements, several men surrounded them, verbally abused them, and physically assaulted them in public view.
One of the victims alleged that the attackers repeatedly slapped them, grabbed them forcefully, and tore their clothes during the assault. The women further stated that they struggled to escape while bystanders initially failed to intervene.
Police said a PCR call regarding women in distress was received at Kalkaji Police Station around 7 am, following which officers rushed to the spot and initiated an inquiry. Investigators later identified multiple suspects believed to be involved in the incident.
Senior police officials confirmed that four accused have been detained for questioning. The detained individuals have reportedly been identified as residents linked to the Okhla and nearby areas. Authorities said interrogation is underway and further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
Officials stated that preliminary findings suggest the confrontation began with alleged derogatory remarks directed at the women before turning violent. Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage from the area, questioning witnesses, and reviewing social media videos that surfaced after the incident.
The victims, one reportedly from Assam and the other from Bihar, were medically examined after the incident. Police have registered a case under multiple provisions related to assault, molestation, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult.
The allegations of racial remarks during the altercation have also drawn attention, particularly because one of the women belongs to the northeastern region of India. However, police officials stated that they are still verifying all claims and that the investigation remains active.
The case has reignited debate around public safety and crimes against women in Delhi, especially during late-night and early-morning hours in commercial zones and entertainment districts. Women’s rights activists and social media users have expressed outrage over the incident, demanding strict punishment for those responsible and stronger policing in vulnerable public areas.
Authorities have assured that all accused linked to the assault will be identified and appropriate action will be taken based on evidence collected during the investigation.
