India–EU Summit Adds Fresh Momentum to Strategic Partnership, Says Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the recent India–European Union summit has given renewed momentum to the strategic partnership between the two sides, strengthening cooperation across trade, investment, technology, and global governance frameworks.

She noted that the high-level engagement reflected a shared intent to deepen bilateral ties at a time when the global economy is facing uncertainty and structural shifts. According to her, the discussions helped both sides align priorities and accelerate ongoing collaborative efforts in key sectors.

Sitharaman highlighted that the relationship between India and the European Union is evolving beyond traditional trade linkages into a broader strategic partnership. She emphasized that areas such as sustainable development, clean energy transition, digital innovation, and resilient supply chains are now central to the bilateral agenda.

The Finance Minister pointed out that both sides are working to improve market access, simplify regulatory frameworks, and encourage smoother investment flows. She underlined that predictable and stable economic environments are essential for long-term growth, especially in the current global context marked by disruptions and shifting alliances.  Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs (Photo/@FinMinIndia)

A significant focus of the discussions was on technology and innovation. India and the European Union explored cooperation in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, green hydrogen, and digital infrastructure systems. These sectors are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future economic competitiveness and sustainability.

Beyond economic matters, the summit also addressed wider global challenges including climate change, energy security, and reforms in multilateral institutions. Sitharaman stressed that both India and the European Union share a commitment to a rules-based international order and inclusive global development.

She further observed that India’s growing economic influence is strengthening its position as a key global partner, while the European Union continues to be one of India’s largest trading and investment partners. This mutual importance, she said, forms the foundation of a strong and expanding relationship.

Officials indicated that the outcomes of the summit are expected to guide future negotiations and institutional cooperation mechanisms. Both sides are likely to continue discussions on trade and investment frameworks aimed at further deepening economic integration.

Overall, the summit was described as a constructive step that reinforces long-term strategic alignment and opens new opportunities for cooperation between India and the European Union in the years ahead.
