Six Missing After Boat Capsizes in Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur

A tragic boat accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district triggered a large-scale rescue operation after a passenger boat capsized in the Yamuna River on Wednesday, leaving at least six people missing. Local authorities, disaster response teams, and divers launched an intensive search mission as concerns grew over the safety of passengers traveling on small river boats during fluctuating water conditions.

According to officials, the incident occurred when a country-made boat carrying several passengers overturned midstream while crossing a section of the Yamuna River. Initial reports suggested that the vessel was overloaded, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the accident. Witnesses stated that strong currents and imbalance may have contributed to the boat losing stability before capsizing.

Several passengers managed to swim to safety or were rescued by nearby villagers and local fishermen who rushed to the scene immediately after the accident. However, six individuals remained unaccounted for hours after the mishap, prompting emergency teams to intensify rescue efforts along the riverbank and adjoining areas.

District administration officials said personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police teams, and local divers were deployed to conduct search operations. Boats equipped with rescue equipment were seen combing the river as officials coordinated efforts to locate the missing individuals. Authorities also appealed to residents in nearby villages to report any sightings or information that could assist rescuers. Boat Capsizes in Yamuna, 6 Missing in UP, Rescue Operations Intensify

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as passengers struggled in the water after the boat suddenly overturned. Local residents reportedly used ropes and makeshift flotation devices to help rescue survivors before emergency services arrived. Some of the rescued individuals were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment and observation.

Officials said weather and river conditions were being closely monitored to support ongoing rescue efforts. The administration also announced that an inquiry would be conducted to determine whether safety norms were violated, including the possibility of overloading and lack of adequate life-saving equipment on the boat.

Boat accidents remain a recurring concern in several riverine regions of northern India, particularly in rural areas where small ferries are commonly used for daily transportation. Safety experts have repeatedly stressed the need for stricter enforcement of passenger limits, mandatory life jackets, and regular inspections of locally operated boats.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with unregulated river transport services, especially during periods of unpredictable river flow. Authorities assured that all possible resources were being used to trace the missing persons and provide assistance to affected families.

Rescue operations continued late into the evening as officials hoped for positive developments in the search mission.
