Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is reportedly seriously injured and is currently in hiding, as per a report in the New York Times. Though he is alive, conscious, and mentally active, his physical condition is said to be weak.
As per reports, Khamenei has suffered major injuries. One of his legs has been operated on three times, and doctors may soon give him a prosthetic leg. He has also had surgery on one hand and is slowly recovering. His face and lips are badly burned, which has made it difficult for him to speak, and he may need plastic surgery in the future.
His condition has prevented him from appearing in public or giving any speech since taking charge after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei. He is said to be avoiding public appearances, so that he does not look weak during this sensitive time.
Communication with him is also secret. Messages are handwritten and passed through trusted people using cars and bikes. Even top officials do not meet him directly due to security fears.
Due to limited access to the leader, military commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps have taken control of important decisions. Experts say this shows a shift from a single strong leader to a group-led system.
Meanwhile, civilian leaders like President Masoud Pezeshkian are playing a smaller role, mostly handling internal matters. Talks with the United States have been stalled after military leaders opposed negotiations.
Overall, Iran’s system continues to work, but the way power is managed has clearly changed.
