Taiwan’s opposition leader Cheng Li-Wun met Chinese President Xi Jinping and shook hands in a rare meeting. As per reports, this is the first time in almost 10 years that a Taiwanese political leader has met China’s top leader. The meeting is seen as an important diplomatic development.

Reportedly, the interaction took place during a high level event. Both leaders greeted each other and talked briefly, the handshake symbolized a possible step toward better communication between Taiwan and China.

As per reports, relations between Taiwan and China have been tense for many years. China considers Taiwan as it territory, while Taiwan sees itself as self governed, making such meetings are very rare.

Experts say this meeting could help reduce tensions and open dialogue. However, no major agreements were announced during interaction, and the meetings merely showed a willingness to communicate.

The last similar high-level meeting between a Taiwanese political figure and China’s top leadership happened nearly a decade ago.
